Lol ditto, next year i thinking of raising some turkeys in hopes for thanksgiving and christmas but couldnt this year also depends on whether or not we have blackhead in our soil as thats deadly to turkeys. We also are talking about raising meat birds and getting a two dairy calfs and a bull calf and a bull for meat. So we see what we do. If no one does i try for next year.

Black head? Is that similar to black leg in Cattle?

Appartently the chickens will pick it from the soil(doesnt hurt them) but if you have a turkey with the chickens they can give it to the turkey which will cause liver to get black spots which will cause it (the liver i believe) to fail and kill the turkey.

I see. I actually Googled it quick, worried that it was the same parasite (we have black leg in the soil). Google led me right back here, kind of funny really, to an old post where someone explained it well, not the same parasite. Thanks for the info!

No problem i was talking to some about keeping turkeys with chickens and found out. Now how and were you get your soil tested out is unknow to me.

Your county extension office might offer that service or at least be able to tell you who does do it. Worth a phone call anyway.

I have will have to ask my husband what county we are in or what office it would be. We live i think in bexar county but not sure and the office or offices i dont know where would they be at.

This is the old post. very informative. Apparently you should contact your state ag they know if it is in the area. Also you can still keep the birds togeather it just requires regular worming
