Picked cherries yesterday, 3 ice cream pails full. The place I go to pick at has an antique commercial pitter that they will run your cherries through for a small fee. It is so nice to have them picked, rinsed, pitted and frozen already. Usually takes me 2 days just to wash and pit them. I have 6 cups of cherry juice in the fridge to make cherry jelly, 18 cups frozen for eating, and about 10 cups for canning something. I still have pie filling from last year, so not making more pie filling this year.
Try cherry jam instead of cherry jelly. It is awesome.

Oh you are so lucky! When we moved into this house in 1983 the first thing I did was plant cherry trees. The years they produce well we get maybe a handful. One time I got enough for a pie. The squirrels and the birds eat them all. They’ve even started eating them before they’re ripe.
I cover mine with bird netting or I wouldn't get any cherries at all.

Man do these pics bring back memories from my childhood!
My job was always pitting those red devils! Lol but they sure were tasty in cobblers!!!

Things ya take for granted as a kid for sure!
Would love a cherry tree now!
When I was a kid we had huge cherry trees and didn't have to fight the birds for them. We did have a cherry pitter that worked well.

I have an antique cherry pitter that is very similar and works well. I have not seen any new fangled pitters that look worthwhile.

Here is a pie that I made today. Fresh organic blueberries hand picked today.
Blueberry Pie
Ingredients:

Any store bought pie crust should do fine. ( I did make my own though)
6 cups blueberries rinsed, smash about 25% to absorb the dry ingredients.
1/4 tsp sea salt
1/4 cup brown sugar, plus a little extra to sprinkle on top of pie
1/3 cup granulated sugar
( I used 15% less brown and granulated sugar and it was still sweet enough )
1/4 cup all purpose flower
1/4 tsp cinnamon
2 tsp butter
1 egg white
Instructions:
Preheat oven to 425° F (219° C)Place bottom pie crust on greased 9 inch pie dish.
Mix pureed berries, brown sugar, regular sugar, flour, cinnamon and salt in large mixing bowl.
Pour filling onto the pie crust.
Break up little pieces of butter and place on top of filling.
Top with pie crust (some variation allowed for personal preference) if you do go with a solid top, make a few holes in it to let the steam out as it's baking.

Mix the egg white with a Tbsp of water and brush onto the top of the pie.
Sprinkle a little brown sugar over the pie and put it in the oven for 35 minutes.
Eat with vanilla ice cream if you would like to. :)

Good Pie Crust (unknown author)
Ingredients:

I had to double this recipe to do a top and bottom crust.
1 1/2 cup flour ( I added 1/4 cup baby oats )
1 1/2 tsp sugar ( I used raw sugar )
1 tsp salt ( I used sea salt )
1/2 cup oil ( I used coconut oil )
2 Tbsp milk ( I used goats milk )
Mix oil and milk, then add dry ingredients. Pat into 9" pie pan.
Bake crust at 425°F ( 219°C )for 8-12 minutes, before adding the filling. (I baked it for 10 minutes and it was perfect) Fresh blueberries handpicked today.

A pretty interesting situation I am in now.

An animal has been killing my friends chickens. She had 15, and now she’s down to four. She told me that she wanted me to set up my trail camera to see what the culprit was, and I caught them.

The culprits are two skunks and a raccoon. The raccoon is killing the chickens and leaving them behind, and the skunks are breaking in and eating what’s left. This is all according to trail camera footage.

She asked me to eliminate them. You can do that in my state. In Idaho, skunks and raccoons are classified as predators, and are unprotected.

One of the skunks already went down by my hand this morning.

One skunk and one raccoon to go.

Let the hunt begin!

I removed a coon this morning. I have been fortunate and not had any skunks to deal with yet this year.
