Any Home Bakers Here?

I made some blueberry sourdough muffins again today. I only had cake flour so I used that. I wonder if I can feed my starter with cake flour?
Yes!

Any flour will work along with different liquids--milk, water, even orange juice!

I wasn't sure about using the cake flour so since I fed the starter last night with the last of my AP flour I took out some for my muffins and put the rest in the fridge. I have to get feed for the birds tomorrow so I'll go to town and pick up more flour.

I have to downsize my flock so when breeding time comes next spring I won't have to deal with it and I will be ready when it's time to set up the breeding pens. I have to move some of the males around to give some of the females a break especially since I need to sell some and let their feathers grow in first so they will look better without the males jumping on them. There are a few who have some balding spots on their backs who are the males favorite girls. I'll have a lot of males for the freezer. I have to get my bachelor pens set up too pretty soon before the males hormones start flowing and pick out who to keep as breeders, for the freezer and to sell. Right now I have over 400 birds.

I need to start canning some of the old hens I have to make room for the new ones I hatched out this year. Currently I have some 6 week old and one 4 week old chicks. It looks like I will have 5 cockerels and 4 pullets from them.

Well I am trying to make spaghetti sauce we will see how it turns out. I needed to use up the bell peppers, tomatoes from last year I cooked it yesterday and I am still cooking it to finish it with spices. Plus cooking out all the water. If it turns out by dinner I know what we are eating. I made hot sauce yesterday can't. My husband isn't a hot sauce fan unless I have cooked it lol. He is strange.

Hey guys! Haven't posted here in a while, but I have been reading all the posts. :) In my grilling book, there's a recipe where you make a solar cooker using a Pringles can. We made the solar cooker today and are waiting for it to "pre-heat" right now. I'm excited to see how it works! We're going to cook a hotdog in it.

There is a recipe called "Crazy Cake or Wacky Cake". It is a depression era cake recipe you can find almost anywhere (pinterest, recipe sites). It uses no eggs, milk or butter. My grandmother used to take this recipe and place little dobs of it in the bottom of a muffin tin and pop them out like cookies. She also poured it thin over a cookie sheet and cut it into thin bars. She cooked it a tiny bit longer so it would crisp the edges. These are the best "cookies" ever and you can make them in a ton of flavors, though the original recipe is for a chocolate cake. Hope that helps :)

I make that cake all the time...I'll never make another box cake again as it is fabulous.

That is a lot of birds. I have 16 hens and (6) 7 week olds and sometimes that seems like a lot.

Interesting!
Post some photos (?) and let us know how it works!

I too have just been lurking and reading...drooling over everyone's goodies. Hot weather I don't bake much, but canning season is coming soon...

After seeing these post I recall making this cake many many years ago. I don't know why but it slipped my mind. I'll blame the birds. I became a breeder so most of my attention is on the birds. I love to bake. What I made was more cake like. The methods I've googled are a bit different in preparation. I used my mixer and mixed my batter with it and poured it in a pan. I guess maybe back in the depression they may not have used mixers even hand mixers. My first mixer was a hand mixer. This is what I used to make the cake.

Did you ever make a cake called hot milk cake?

My Mom used to make it. I need to look it up.
