Any Home Bakers Here?

When I was in culinary school they told me that after a month all starter will be colonized by the native yeasts. So any starters that you have now or in the future the same thing could happen. Some times it is killed by the meds we take as well or if it is the monthly curse. A friend ship starter can be make using your native yeasts but it will not taste good for about a year. It is one that taste better the older it gets. Do you have any starters now?
Sorry I missed your new member intro…

Glad you joined us and so glad you joined this thread.

Wow, a culinary school background! Impressive.

Interesting comments on the starter. Wonder how medications do that?

Can't wait to see some of the the things you bake...

I have moved back to Wyoming, so no more problem with the really strong, nasty wild yeasts. I guess if it can live in the high mountain desert, it has be really aggressive.

I do not have any starter right now. We are on Weight Watchers, so I really can't be making much bread. Bread is my weakness.
Congrats and condolences on your Weight Watchers diet. Wish you success in your goals.

I think once we commit to a plan and see success, then the next step is to learn control. Maybe later you can make smaller loaves of healthy breads and limit the servings?

Not all yeasts are good yeasts, I know from experience that there are EVIL yeasts out there. The starter turned a really dark grey, when it separated the liquid was almost black and the starter had a very bitter undertone to it. The smell was a very musty sour, more musty than anything else. Not good eats at all.

We eat a lot of sugar-free Jell-O here. It is a nice dessert for those days when there are no points left in the tracker. I also make Jell-O "cook and serve" pudding and put it into 1/2 cup containers. It is 3 points and 1/2 cup is just enough of the sweetness to top off a meal. DH really likes taking one for lunch every day, he has a sweet tooth.

Have you tried Royal Pudding - the unsweetened one does not get cooked, but it is great. Fooled my diabetic friends - made a low cal chocolate pie and they wanted the recipe!

Never heard of Royal Pudding. I'll have to look that one up.
DH has like 30 more points that I do, so he is always looking for ways to use up his points. Oreos as a snack after work and before bed is his technique at the moment.

Royal Gelatin by Jel Sert: It has been around for "centuries" when I was a child and dinosaurs were still around…:)

Royal is sold as a pudding/pie mix. Box is same size as small Jello boxes and would be found on the same aisle in grocery. The regular pudding/pie mix is heated in milk but sugar free low cal ones are just mixed up like the jello puddings. IMO they taste like home made from scratch puddings, something I don't think Jello brand has ever accomplished.

Gee, never thought to try their flavored gelatins. Maybe better than Jello? Will have to research that one.

Hey home bakers!

Anyone here plan on baking something special for Valentine's Day? I got mom's old springform pan and was thinking of trying a cheesecake. Chocolate anything is DH's favorite treat, lol. Can anyone recommend a good chocolate cheesecake recipe?

I have a good chocolate cheesecake recipe. Will post later. I add kahlua to it, mmmmm! I don't think I'm making anything special Valentine's Day, we don't really do anything for it. I have my daycare open for the evening so parents can have a date night

. I think I'll order pizza for my son and the kids who come as a special treat.

Made up a new bread recipe today that I got it from an old family friend who used to be a home ec teacher. Since she gave me the recipe, I named it after her, Donna's Dilly Bread. It's in the oven now, I'll let you know how it turns out.

Hi Alice28! I'd love to get your cheesecake recipe. I don't have any Kahlua, will it be ok without it?

Nice of you to take the kids so the parents can have a night out.

The recent posts on sourdough got me ready to bake some.

Wish I had decided earlier today, but will have to wait to tomorrow.

Gonna bake Rustic Olive Sourdough Bread..a KA recipe, but I use canned black olives in lieu of the Olive "flavor".

Have only done this once, but it was really good.
