I'll check through here to make sure that a recipe for this type of bread hasn't been posted, but I have an awesome recipe for Challah bread. It's a braided yeast bread, absolutely gorgeous when complete.

I just won first for my category and sweepstakes prize for the whole bread division in the Tulsa State Fair culinary competition. It was so exciting! I have to say that I love the process and smells of baking bread, or just baking in general. It's very peaceful.

Good to see another baker here, please feel free to share any recipes you like. Congrats on the win at the Tulsa State Fair, that's big! I'd love to see your Challah bread recipe so I can compare it to the one I made about a week ago. That was my first attempt at Challah and it turned out so pretty (and tasty, lol).

I made Italian bread yesterday, nothing fancy but yummy.
I am yearning for some dinner rolls. I have downloaded a couple of recipes to try, I just don't need 2 dozen rolls for the 2 of us.

When we moved I had to leave the neighbors behind, and they took all my excess baking off my hands. I need to meet the neighbors here...

So here is my chocolate-chip banana bread recipe (I have metric measurements is parenthesis):

Chocolate Chip Banana Bread

Combine:
1/3 cup of oil (80ml)
1 cup of sugar (250ml)
1/4 cup of water or milk (60ml)

Add:
1-2 beaten eggs
2-3 mashed bananas
1 tsp. vanilla (5ml)
1 tsp. lemon juice, optional (5ml) (I don't use it, but you could try)

Combine separately and add:
2 cups flour (500ml)
1/2 tsp. salt (2ml)
1 tsp. baking soda (5ml)
1/4-1/2 tsp. cinnamon (1-2ml) (Use as much of this as you want, I doubt I ever put this little.)

Fold the flour mixture gently into the wet ingredients, being careful not to over-mix, until batter forms. (This is a quick bread so you will get a batter, not a dough.) Stir in 1/2-1 cup of chocolate-chips, pour into a greased loaf pan or 9*9 pan. Bake at 350 degrees Fahrenheit (180 degrees Celsius) for 45-60 minutes, or until bread is golden brown and an inserted toothpick comes out clean.

Be sure you have your bananas mashed before you start doing everything else, it's very annoying to forget it and then have to mash them while you're in the middle of the recipe.

Trying to imagine the look on your cousins face when a total stranger shows up at their door with fresh baked dinner rolls - they would still be hot from the oven of course!

Unfortunately, I just moved to Wisconsin, otherwise, I used to live halfway between Cheyenne and Laramie. So I could have made it happen easily!
 
I used to have friends that were also neighbors... I could borrow a bit of some ingredient from them if I needed to, (this was when I lived in China where you couldn't just go out and buy things, it was quite a bike ride depending on what you needed) and I would repay them with cookies! I loved it and so did they.

For some reason I was thinking you moved from Wisc. to Wy. Oh boy, this memory I have is getting worse all the time. Wonder if it's a side effect from too much flour dust inhalation?

You're going to have to make some new neighbor friends. Having someone close by that can donate a 1/2 sugar for the baking cause is a good thing to have (and a pretty good deal for them too).

How long have you been here in the U.S.? I always thought China would be an amazing place to visit. I love history and a visit there would sure give me a fix for that!
 
I was born here, but spent three and a half years in China. I have been living in the U.S. for a year and a half since moving back. It was pretty amazing living in China, especially since we lived in a small farming village (not the city). It was not too far from the city, though, so we could get our foreign imports if we wanted them.

Also, I have a question if anyone cares to try answering it: I want to make carrot cake, but I have two types of carrots. I have the stereotypical orange carrots, and I also have these "rainbow" carrots. Do you think I could make it with the rainbow ones?

So what do you think? I feel like it would be pretty cool to try it with these ones, but I obviously don't want the taste to be off. Has anyone tried something like this?

Hi Xiao Casa,

I don't think the rainbow carrots would have a different taste in the cake but I'm not sure if they would keep their color once baked. If you try using them, Id like to know how they work out. They are pretty cool looking carrots! I'd try them just to find out (and hey, it's cake...it will be eaten for sure).

I have met the neighbors, just need to work up to the "cup of sugar" stage. I had that back in WY, but we were 20 miles form a grocery store and we all relied on each other.

Back in WY, I borrowed a can of tomato sauce from the neighbors once - I had everything ready for pizza and then found out I didn't have any. When hubby went next door to pick it up, our friend jokingly asked for $50. DH returned the tomato sauce two days later ... and took a 6 pack of beer with him.

Last night, I was making stuffed shells and was out of parsley. Instead of driving 7 miles to the store I substituted Chervil. I couldn't tell a difference.
