Any Home Bakers Here?

Thanks NorthFlChick, I've been around some…welcoming some new members, reading threads, but nothing really to add to the discussion.

Baking very little - but did bring out a pumpkin pie I froze unbaked at Christmas and baked it for New Years. Was as good as the fresh baked one.

Been doing some sewing….making napkins from stash scraps.

Hope everyone had happy holidays.

I have not been baking much. Just me and DH and not a whole lot of holiday spirit. I did make Kringles at Christmas, took them to the family party. Guess I need to make him some today so he can enjoy before the big diet on Monday.
Off to make Indian Fry Bread for breakfast. I have to get the grinder down and make some wheat flour first.

Hi Alice28, guess we're on the same baking schedule...I'm baking cookies today too. It's our wedding anniversary so I'm making DH's favorite (peanut butter cookie with a mini peanut butter cup pressed into the top).

Yum! We use the do the with a herseys kisses on top. Happy anniversary! My husband loves brownies, so that's what I make for special occasions for him. Your cookies sound yummy!

Wow! you grind your own flour. Where do you get the grains to do it?

Another attempt at trying to reconstruct my Mom's Cheese Straw Recipe:

I had posted during the holidays that I was trying to reconstruct my mom's recipe & use the same cookie disc she preferred. I had her original recipe and thought they were way too greasy and over the years changed, changed, until they no longer resembled hers..

And lost the original!

And now after a decade have found that my problem was using butter and not a good baking margarine. But the recipe is now long gone 'cause of my revisions.

Today did another google search, made a chart of all the top choices = ones that could be used with a cookie press.
This batch looks promising, I'm not good at the press thing, but almost all at least look ..sorta..like they should..

I didn't photo the real rejects…those have been.. ah..tasted.

I have another similar ratio one to try that uses margarine.

Today read that one should not even taste them for a day….that's why my last try was horrible but the next day were quite good. But I'm on a quest not just for flavor but a texture. Boy, I feel quite stupid…if I had followed her recipe with oleo/margarine I would have saved so, so much heartache.

***this is the first time I could half way use my Mirro press!!!

Thanks Alice28. Brownies are good too (DH is a choco-holic so anything chocolatey is good for him)!

sunflour, I would have made the same substitution with the butter for margarine. My grandma always used to bake with lard and I never have so any of her family favorites aren't quite the same. Your cheese straws look good, let us know how they are (tomorrow, I guess?). I still kick myself whenever I think of losing my Mom's old cookie press. I used that thing for years and I just hate that it's gone. Some day might get a new one but it won't be Mom's, you know?
