7 to 10 dollars from Target. This allows the air our but not in.

Make or keep?

Freshly made starter takes some time to get going.

I have some dried starter ready to mail to people. Let me know if you want me to mail you a start.

This will work to make sourdough:

Notice the jar he uses to keep starter. The important thing is to allow the gas out without breaking the jar. A regular lidded jar will break because of the pressure
Is it easier to make my own using a dried starter?

It is very easy and will be raising bread without yeast within a week. I you start from scratch, it will take 6 months or so for the starter to be able to raise bread without yeast.

Six months wow, wait does it make a difference in the taste you use that an yeast?
Yes, if you do not use yeast, the flavor of the sourdough develops better.

Send me your address in a PM and I will mail some starter to you. You can start your own too.

The starter is free.

If I'm converting that right thats only a 1 litre jar so with mine at least that was too small and the top lifted up and it ran down the sides. I think I ended up settling on a 1.5 litre jar. I work on 200g of starter. So every time I feed it its 200g starter, 200g flour and 200g water. Then that gives me enough that when I do a loaf I have 200g for the loaf and 200g to feed and save. So if you are working on 150g or even 100g you might get away with it. It's not like you need to pull out that loaf amount as well yet so you could start of smaller and keep an eye out for a larger jar for when it's ready and you need to start keeping more. You are just throwing out a lot if you start too big anyway.

Is there any reason you can't just cover the jar with whatever you were going to cover a bowl with?

My starter took a good 6 weeks to be usable though so it was a slow process so plenty of time to work on it while you find your final jar.
