Any Home Bakers Here?

We're debating here. Got 10 turkeys in the freezer that haven't sold, two monster turkeys that aren't for sale, a ham and a ny strip roast. Hmmmm decisions decisions:idunno:confused::idunno

Boy, that's a tough one alright! Any of those things would be a great meal!

Instant Hot Coco Mix

Huge Note: Powdered milks are not created equal. We taste tested more than a dozen brands before we settled on this mix. Range of results went from Horrible/nasty - too rich.

QTY Unit Description
2 Cup Powdered sugar
1 Cup cocoa (dutch process)
2.5 Cup powdered milk
1 tsp Salt
2 tsp cornstarch
1 pinch cayenne or chipolte pepper (Optional)
5.5 Cups Serving Size (1/4 cup or 4 coffee scoops) add hot water and freeze dried marshmallows. I'll generally double the recipe and we have huge air tight container to keep it in. Made my last batch in January.

If you like it richer, creamier you can use Nido Milk, but in taste test, DW thought that was too much.

So Bob, what brand of powdered milk did you end up liking? This would be nice to have on hand for the winter, and probably (?) less expensive than the instants you can buy at the store.

We were just discussing this last night at my parent's house. Thanksgiving dinner is almost always there, but we provide the turkey. We have the guest of honor picked out and he will be starting his journey to the table on Sunday afternoon or Monday morning. We'll be having mashed potatoes, stuffing, green bean casserole, sweet potatoes, possibly baked corn, rooms, Pumpkin pie and apple if mom is feeling adventurous and I've been asked to make lemon lush (lemon pudding layer dish with cream cheese, walnut crust, and whipped cream)

"guest of honor" Your holiday meal is going to be great!

Here's a photo of the brotform and the bread I made yesterday. The bread recipe is one I got on this thread, called Gump Bread:

I like how the form makes those rings on the loaf and it seemed like the bread dough rose better due to having the bowl coils to kind of 'grab' onto. I'll be using the brotform for a lot of different recipes, I really like it!

Here's the rum cake I baked yesterday:
100_0016.JPG

It's supposed to sit overnight before serving to let the syrup really soak in but we got into it about 7 hours after baking. It was pretty "rummy" last night but has mellowed out today. Very moist and flavorful (and perfect with a cup of coffee).

This is the King Arthur recipe I used:caribbean-rum-cake-recipe

There's a link to the dutch processed coco and a link for the milk in the recipe. But thank you for asking as I put the wrong link in first go around: This is the correct one https://beprepared.com/instant-nonfat-dry-milk-large-can.html The company changed its name and confused me. Oh and a word of warning, the site for the coco is addictive.

I have the same one you do.:highfive:

Ron, The Bread Bucket is clean of rust. BUT, it is NOT shining like it
did when I put it away. There is a "kinda black" coating around the top...it looks creppy. I am not sure it would be safe to use? Your
thoughts? I have salt and vinegar soaking on it now...and will do more scrubbing.

Debby NFC...there is an excellent article on Bread Making in this months issue of Mother Earth News....using stencil designes on bread. That Gump Bread Recipe...can it be made in a tin? I would like the recipe. I am going to visit King Arthur site and get the Rum Cake recipe. You all have some NEAT recipes. Aria

Here you go Aria...the Gump Bread recipe is here:#507
I cut the recipe in half just to test out the brotform, but it calls for baking it in bread pans.

Is the bucket lined inside with stainless steel or galvanized steel? Post a picture if you can

Is everyone planning for Thanksgiving dinner yet? I just realized it's next week! This year is wrapping up quickly.

It will be just DH & I for Thanksgiving so we're keeping meal plans pretty simple (at least, that's what we're saying now). I think we'll do a baked turkey breast, baked sweet potatoes and dressing. And pumpkin pie of course :D

We are eating with friends :D - we usually invite them over but this year I'll be working 12 hours Wed before so no way could we get everything ready by lunch....but we'll reciprocate for Christmas dinner.

Your menu is perfect :thumbsup

P.S. Scrubbing my Vintage Universal Bread Bucket

Hope it turns out well - saw your later posts, hope after all the work it is usable. Most on the internet for sale are listed for nostalgic decor use.

kinda funny that our really old is now prime we have three full sets of milk glass bowls they are now selling online good grief just one large bowl asking 56.00 ? wonder what they get for it

Asking price and selling price is often quite different. Local flea market/antique places in our area are a lot lower than eBay.
