Their pies were good but I make better pies!We went there for the pie too. In fact, most of the time that is the only thing we went there for. I love their fresh strawberry and peach pies, although those came much later. They used to have the best rolled crusts. But, now I think they are pressed and just not as good. Something changed. I don't make pie, so I can't be sure what it is.
Starter is very forgiving and can usually be brought back to life.Lol, he sent me a start, I pi**ed it off and it turned pepto bismol pink on me! I got the sucker calmed back down and it is now in my freezer where it's not going to turn weird colors again (hopefully)
Mine really doesn't like my tap water. My husband thought I was nuts when I started buying gallons of distilled water for the bubbling slime in my jar.Starter is very forgiving and can usually be brought back to life.
I have never killed mine-- I have had starter going since 1985
It is usually chlorine it does not like. If you are on a well, have you had it tested? It might need a shock of Chlorine to clean out some buggiesMine really doesn't like my tap water. My husband thought I was nuts when I started buying gallons of distilled water for the bubbling slime in my jar.
I actually think it's because the water is really high pH and sourdough is an acid, I messed up it's levels every time I fed it and it had to work hard to fix it. But, we are on city water, so who knows what they have in it.It is usually chlorine it does not like. If you are on a well, have you had it tested? If it is chlorine, you can use a simple filter that remove chlorine
When Woodland was using ground water, we had very high ph. The sourdough was fine with an RO filter then. The filter remove a lot of the chemicals and one of them that was very bad here is Borax!I actually think it's because the water is really high pH and sourdough is an acid, I messed up it's levels every time I fed it and it had to work hard to fix it. Have you tried adding a bit of vinegar? I would start with a teaspoon in the jar and a tablespoon in a bread recipe to see if it helpsIt was tested 4 years ago, when we bought the place. It is just really hard water with a lot of iron also. We added an iron filter and it helps, but we really need to get a water softener back in use. I don't even like to use the well water for boiling anything, it leaves quite a ring of crud at the waterline when ever I do.
