Any Home Bakers Here?

I hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.

I haven't made these in a long time but they are delicious. I like tart apples in them like granny smith.

We like this topping better.

FOR THE TOPPING

  • 1 1/2 c.
    all-purpose flour
  • 1 c.
    packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 tsp.
    kosher salt
  • 1/4 tsp.
    ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 c.
    (1 stick) melted butter
I tried Goldrush apples for the first time this year, have you heard of them? They are really tart like Granny Smith's but they have a wonderful perfume to them that stays when they're baked. I made a ton of apple crisps this year and they worked really well in them.

I hadn't heard of them. I will certainly keep an eye out. They sound really good.
I live close to a store that carries some really interesting fruits I hadn't seen other places. They may be one that has them near me.

So. Many. Leftovers. What a first world problem, Sally.

A friend got a fresh turkey from a local farm this year, said it was delicious and she'll do it again. Since I've only ever had frozen, I might have to try that next time.

We had homegrown potatoes for the mashed taters, and DH insisted that I not use blue potatoes. :gig So I want try making some more mashed taters using the blue ones. I've never had mashed blues; does the color leach out?

The color leaches into anything that you cook them in. They will still be "purple" smashed taters. If you close your eyes when you taste them, they will taste like regular mashed potatoes. If you keep your eyes open, who knows what your brain will make them taste like.

I do know that putting the really sweet purple carrots in chicken soup is not a good idea. Chicken soup isn't supposed to be purple and definitely is not supposed to be sweet. They are great in carrot cake though.

With the Red Gold potatoes, I like them for baked potatoes. The yellow colored flesh causes my mind to taste butter even if I haven't buttered them.

Morning Home Bakers. I feel a food hangover Is my problem today
I did make a apple pie of 4 granny smith and 4 cosmic crisp. Like full pies Grandma had two that were 10 and 10 1/2 inches takes more to fill them.

We like the blue ones, but we don't usually mix them with anything other than sometimes with a roast in a slow cooker. We like them any way they're made.
