Fantastic news! I hardly dared ask after you posted that photo. So relieved for you both!
Yeah that skin problem was very unexpected and not typical. It still looks nasty but is hardening and scabbing over. Still not sure why it happened since it didn’t start near the incision. My poor girl couldn’t catch a break! But each day she is improving and acting more like her old self. She’s a trooper!

Update: with the exception of a low appetite, Willow is doing well. She gets her sutures out in 2 days. The skin that was black seems to be hardening like a big scab, I have been sending pics to the vet every few days. She will be finishing up her antibiotics and pain meds in the next few days. Hopefully she continues to recover and gets her appetite back soon! She just nibbles here and there despite being offered a huge variety of food.

Willow went to the vet today for her recheck and was supposed to have her sutures removed. It turns out the blackened skin is going to have to be removed and debrided, then the area needs to be sutured. The vet will do it tomorrow.

This isn’t common and the vet says he has never seen this before. I used to work at a vet hospital as a tech (for dogs and cats) and have also never seen anything like this. The area isn’t directly where the sutures are, it’s almost parallel to it.

My poor Willow, she was just getting back to her old self. I’m now concerned something else is going on, an underlying condition we don’t know about yet. Or it’s just a weird coincidence to what should have been a routine procedure. Will provide an update after her next surgery is done. I feel so bad putting her through all this, I really hope this is the last setback she has.

So long as she is happy and has a good quality of life after the procedures, then don’t feel bad for her. I’m sure you’re doing the best you can for her, far more than most people would for a chicken!

Stay strong, praying for you and Willow!

Willow’s procedure is done. The dead skin was removed and she has several newly sutures areas. Some of the skin closures are a little tight, so she will have to be on cage rest for a while. She’s staying overnight so they can check on her in the morning before sending her home. I can’t wait to get her back home! Thank you all for the encouragement. Willow is an amazing chicken, especially with all she has gone through.

I hope she heals quickly and has no more problems.
Thank you for the latest news on Willow.

I missed this thread and just caught up on the posts! I hope this is the last hurdle in her recovery, she is a trooper!!! Sending best wishes for you and Willow. One of my gals had surgery about 1 1/2 years ago but it was for impacted crop. Expensive and scary but she recovered nicely and is happy (and sassy) and healthy. We have a vet school nearby, not a lot of chickens as patients but they took great care of her. Violet was confined in a dog crate and then supervised time in the house until healed. Initially she only ate bits of scrambled egg, tuna and then pellets soaked in water. Keeping fingers crossed for Willow
