Any one have Blue Crowned Pigeons?

I have never had any, but would dearly love to get some. When I have seen some offered for sale over the years, they were a fortune! I spent last summer in Thailand and the zoo in Bangkok had a large group of them. In one huge walk-through aviary, they had probably 25-30 of them. Just beautiful!

Those guys are beautiful, but EXPENSIVE!
Costs a lot for breeders to have them imported over here, so that's why they cost so much. They require a little more special care than regular pigeons though. Different kind of aviary requirements and such.

Crowned Pigeons mature at about 2 yrs of age, they lay 1 egg per clutch(white, about as big as a med chicken egg). Incubation period is 30 days and then the single baby is dependent on its parents for another 2 months before it is ready to go on its own.

1 pair of Crowned Pigeons only produces 1-2 young a year. Hand rearing them is extremely difficult and most handfeeding experts would not dare attempt rearing a crown pigeon.....

Their slow reproduction rate is probably the biggest cost factor with these birds. A single bird tends to run at about $2000 - $2500 US.

When my husband has time, I will try to get him to upload some of the Thailand pictures. Seeing these birds in a large group was just amazing. The funny thing is that they don't look at all like what most people (me included, lol) would imagine a pigeon looking like.
