Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Found a green egg on the coop floor this morning...good and bad. One of my EEs is laying!!!! (probably Wiggy!!!) but not in the nesting box! The egg was super thin shelled...but a pretty green color!

Very kewl! Can't wait to get a blue and green layer, she'll catch on to the nest soon enough. I used a fake egg. Seemed like the first couple one of my girls laid were soft and below the roost...they're perfect now and in the nest. Few more tries she'll have it down :)

Ive caught her 3 times today standing in the doorway of the coop watching the other hens lay. I think that has to be a good sign!!! So hoping to get a perfect egg soon.

I had quite a few eggs on the coop floor, some in the run as well. LOL I wonder if they're like toddlers learning to potty- you know, by the time they realize they got to go, it's too late so they go wherever they are.

WheeewHooo! First egg. Itty Bitty thing, laid in the Hanger where I was storing a bail of hay. It was obviously on from mid morning. Abby, was not hanging with the rest of the flock. Then some, I'm getting ready to lay an egg clucking. Then I think my dad shoed her out of the hanger and she was all clucking mad about that. I picked her up and took her to the hay bail figuring that's where she was headed and sure enough she had already been nesting there. Maybe an hour later, all kinds of clucking and I headed over to check. She was out of the hanger and sure enough, egg.

Totally laughably tiny, but pretty good shape and color.

Congrats on the new eggs.

Who all is planting a garden this year and what are you planting for your chickens?

We have a friend that has the property and the good soil so we are blessed with 2 gardens this year. our little one and the big one that's 120 x 65 feet. I am doing the planning of them both. Its a lot of work. They chickens will be getting kale, sunflowers and the carrot tops I am sure they will be getting some of the lettuce, pumpkins and squash seeds too. I can't wait to get started.

Hahaha so true, I did read somewhere the 1st few eggs they don't quite know what's going on back there but nature steps in. My Red banged um out 1st try and each day since, my barred mutt started at the same time but it took about 3 tries, the 4th one was an egg, a lil one! But edible nonetheless. Omg I am dreaming of a blue layer and a green layer now I know they have to make you smile lol
That same barred mutt sings the egg song for each of the other girls everytime and not her own. And the other two don't even bother because she's so loud lol

naksta...are your welsummers laying yet?? Wondering what their eggs look like. I have 2 that are about 15 wks old
Yes they are they started laying back in Oct. I will post a pic of their egg. Mine are 1 year old TODAY!!! they lay nice big eggs. 2.3 to 2.4 ounces nearly every day. They are the loudest of the 3 breeds of chickens that I have owned. I only have two but their eggs change colors slightly so their eggs are always so interesting to me.
The ones on the top are the Wellies the others are my Speckled Sussex.

Im gardening this year :) have it all another gardening thread so far. Dunno if I can link it, newb here has to check the rules. But chickens get all the trimmings from all the gardens here and a regularly seeded patch with lettuce, fast growing micro greens, nasturshums* ,sunflower, all the clearance nursery veggies (nearby nursery does .25 cent 6 packs of veggie starts that are weak or almost out of season) - i plant them a few feet from the edges of the gardens we use for current season veggies. The chickens rarely get into the gardens , the clearance veggies bolt into flower usually (chickens like um either way!)
