There I think that sums up how I feel today. Only 1 egg again!!!!!! I think I would feel better if none of them were laying, at least then my hopes would not be so high. Apparently my rotisserie chicken illustration did not work. I may have to bring them inside tonight and show them the video of my daughter shooting her first gobbler, perhaps that will work better. I can't even begin to imagine how hard it is going to be waiting for that first day of all 10 laying. Oh well i guess tomorrow is another day.

I just went out to collect our one daily egg. Then I sat in the run and watched the chickens for about 30 minutes, scrutinizing every aspect of their behavior and appearance. My conclusion? They might never lay. There are no signs of interest.

Congrats Roses

Pullet eggs are so cute, egg-citing and egg-dicting. Redangler I always talked to my girls every time I go out back. Which is about 6 times a day. They talked to me every time I walk out the door its only polite to talk back to them. My boys make fun of me for it but I don't care. Animals make great therapists, they will never tell anyone what you tell them. lol

Thanks! Maybe I will start talking to them a little more, you know for the therapy aspect!!! Great Idea!! :D

I'm jealous of anyone getting eggs. I have 12 girls and am getting one egg a day. If I'm lucky. They're all old enough, but between molting, short days and stress of a hawk attack not long ago, the beautiful eggies are few and far between. I also have a young EE whose comb and wattle are just starting to look like she's maturing. Her mother lays the most beautiful olive eggs, and I can't wait to see what hers are going to look like.

I love mine for the same reason Debbie. I can sit and watch them for hours. It gets me out of the house during the long winter months.

So I just did some quick math, and realized we're only getting about 11 hours of daylight in the coop right now. How many hours do they need to start laying? Last year, some of mine started around New Years Day, and by the beginning of Feb, they all had. But I guess every chicken is different.

EDIT: I actually just used this page to calculate my daylight hours based on latitude. It's pretty cool!

Although it says that right now we're only getting 9.6 hours, and we won't get the needed 12 hours to stimulate laying until March 19. Stupid science website.

I had 4 eggs again today. Finally heard my first egg song from my barred rock Betta, and they are all out near the edge of the woods today, as I saw some pretty serious bullying of one of my RIR. I think she is low girl on the totem pole as I have seen everyone kind of push her out of their way. She hangs out with Duke quite a bit, perhaps looking for protection? Any way, it's pretty warm here, about 38 so I let them out. Jack my dog hung out with them, but then he took off after some deer. I'm a bit worried, but they'll be heading back to the coop soon enough. Funny, just a few weeks ago it would be dark by now, and they'd all be on the roost, funny how the sun creeps up ever so slightly.. Not fast enough for all of us.

Reading the last few posts made me think...most of us in here are waiting on pullets I am assuming. It is just such an unpredictable thing. For instance, the barred rock whose egg song I heard today, it took her a good 40 minutes to lay that egg. I timed her, it was a 20 min session of singing,, then a 10 minute quiet, then another 18 minutes till egg time. It was only her second egg. I doubt very much that it will take her that long as her body gets it down and she matures. 4 of my girls have small comb and waddles, where as their breed partners are laying. Just like teenagers hitting puberty, it is all different. I guess we are all so impatient for these darn eggs. All of us with these summer hatch chicks are heading into lay at the best time I believe. I read that mid January through March is peak egg laying season. How can that be? I would have thought it was late spring into summer.

Brooster, can it actually be 12 hours.. we have pullets laying without that much. I really think the next 2-3 weeks is going to be tons of changes for all of us. Please hang in there PeePs,,,

Alas soon... we all will be rolling in white, light brown, brown, dark brown, olive and blue eggs! We will all be egged soon!

Hang in there troops
