Hi everyone! I hope I am posting this in the right place. I am so eggcited to tell everyone I got my first egg ever this afternoon! We live in San Diego county, Vista, Ca. Anyone from these parts? I did also find another egg but it was cracked and everthing was gone. Does that mean that one of the hens ate it? First time ever having chickens. I wasnt looking everyday for eggs because they told us at the feed store they might not lay until spring. That is why I am so surprised and tickled. There is only two hens in this flock. Here is a pix....

16 paws,,

HECK YEAH, you sure did come to the right place! We love first egg picks, and
to the Egg waiting thread! Now that is some big egg for a first, (or second) egg! Nice size! You are in warm sunny California,, I am sure that you will see a stead lay rate now! What kind of chickens do you have? About how old are they? One of us peeps, CatSol is from Muscovy CA, so maybe not too far from you!

Don't worry about the broken egg,, it happens, and just because they ate it, it doesn't mean they will be egg eaters. They are on the other hand, opportunistic, and if an egg was laid off the roost, and broke on landing, well now that is another story! lol...

Do you have nest boxes set up for them? If not, do so, and they will reward you by depositing them there every time!

Glad to have you, and does your name mean you have 4 dogs? I see some in your picture!

YAY 16 paws! So fun to find the eggs :) Even after 4 years I still get excited! Welcome!

YAY !!!! 1000 posts that's great. I have asked my neighbors and only one has a shed and it has been closed. Greta was the quietest chicken I only heard her make a bawk bawk once the whole time I had her. I spent the better part of the day outside looking for her and talking with my neighbors and Shooing that Husky out of our pond it thought it was her own personal swimming pool. I finally ended up taking her by the collar and taking her back to her house and her people were gone so I just put her in the back yard fence. Which finally made her brother stop howling too. While looking for Greta I took the pruning shears with me and pruned the blackberry bushes, the rose bush and the Crabapple tree.

The boys and hubby are keeping my mind off Greta with more Just Dance lol. Sad thing is is I think that I have already excepted that she is gone.

Still keeping the fingers crossed for you. So glad the families making it easier :) Hope you have a good night :)

Hi there,
The two hens are a Jersey Giant and a Light Brahma. Yes we do have nesting boxes

Here is the house they sleep in within the coop, that is where I found the broken egg. Dixie, the Brahma was laying in the nest box but I found the egg on the floor of the coop. Those are fake eggs in the pix.

Here is the coop. Yes, I had four Yorkies but just lost one to 2 rattlesnakes that were hiding in the dog run. So now we have 3. That was the saddest day of my life.

Thank you everyone for the kind words. I really do appreciate. I just really wish I could find some clue any clue at all as to where she went or what happened to her. I hate to think she is out there suffering or starving to death if she is trapped somewhere. I have post her pic on facebook I am friends with a lot of my neighbors of there and they are all keeping an eye out too. Chickens are not like dogs they usually stay pretty close to home. My dogs Beagles ended up running off one night and I got a call from some one almost 2 miles away. Maybe I should put collars and tags on my chickens lol

16 Paws sorry to hear that. We lost our mama Beagle, Ally McBeagle, almost 2 years ago to cancer it was so sad watching her fade away and not being able to do anything for her. She would not make it through another surgery. She nearly died during one of her surgeries to remove the cancer tumor. After watching her just fading away not eating or drinking we had a family meeting and decided to have her put down the next morning. That night just 2 hours after we took pictures with her she passed away in her kennel. It still makes me cry thinking about her.
