Here is the Lace Monitor lizard mooching around our campsite. He would have been after the meat we had or the eggs we brought with us kindly donated by our chickens. Seeing him so close up and bold made me very relieved we have a totally enclosed run for the chickens!
They're not great photos, sorry. He managed to steal a bag of bread rolls when we first arrived and not fast enough in our response. They are not especially dangerous to humans but if cornered they can give a nasty scratch with those claws or bites that turn bad. There is a lot of wild birds at this site too and they created a tremendous racket of alarm calls whenever they spotted it. No doubt they have bitter experience of them stealing eggs and chicks. It meant we always knew when he was approaching our supplies!

Oh don't worry, I don't have delicate eyes to say the least, worked at the racetrack for 15 years! I did that because of BIG BRother.... I actually got reprimanded for posting a cartoon, ( that was hysterical by the way), that had the _astard in it! So now, I'm nervous about any language I use. Imagine the detox if I got banned I would go through. omgoodness.....look what I found.. wouldn't this make the best chicken coop, can't you just see it all fixed up with some TLC? Now, just have to find someone with a flat bed who I can hire to move it! I hope I can swing it!
That's how my RIR Lucy was. Sang for EVERYONE but herself. No one sings at all now, I hate that and wonder why.Audrey just laid the 5th egg for the day, my first 5-egg day. It was so late in the day too. I usually let them out to free-range the last half of the afternoon and when I went to check on them, and found 7 of them together a good distance away doing their normal scratching-thing in the leaves. I got a lump in my throat when there's one I can't find. I finally looked in the nest box and there she was, quiet as ever, with no sentry around, no midwives, no attendants, nobody. She quietly laid an egg, descended down the ramp and no egg song. Kinda sad as she's the one who is the sentry for all the others.
