Any one want to join me in waiting for eggs, posting and comparing notes?

Alright, I think we're getting close. There's maybe two weeks difference between the three oldest and the four younger gals. I'm thinking Tax deadline would be the earliest possible day. My wife keeps sending the girls out to search for eggs they might be 'hiding.' I'm not falling for it. Another week and then we'll really be on watch.

Are yours girls squatting for you now?

I put up nesting boxes the other day and I've noticed a couple of them taking to them, sitting in them for a bit. Would that be squatting? I can't say I've ever heard that term before.

Squatting is what the pullets do when there are ready/mature enough to be mated. They will squat even if you don't have a rooster. when you walk up to them they will squat down and put their wings out and up a bit. It's quite funny to see. That is a great indicator that your girls will be laying with in the next week or 2. I don't have any pics of my girls squatting but I will try and go get one so you can see what it looks like.

I meant to include my alternative. In the summer I give them sultanas instead. About half a cup full between the four of them. They go mad for them!

Sultanas are like raisins or currents, just dried from the sultana variety grape. A bit plumper and juicer than the others, but anything like that would, I'm sure, go down a treat. Which is just what it is!

Yeah, I know that behavior. I have not noticed it in any of these 7 yet. I'll keep an eye out for it now.

There is a Goose next door. She has been causing quite stir with some folks. Fellow came to deliver the feed just the other day, he's about 6'2 300 lbs and wouldn't put the feed in the shed because of the goose. I told him she was just looking for a boyfriend and went and gave her a scratch on the head. I let him go and put the feed in the shed myself. It's one thing for my 35 lb kid to be concerned about the goose's odd behavior. Seeing a defensive tackle sized man get cowed by it was entertaining.

I got 4 eggs from 4 hens today! Yay! Wonder how many days I will get 4. I will be waiting out to see when my bantams lay... they are only 6 weeks. Hoping that some are hens! I know of 3 that are roos, cute little things.

Got my first duck egg yesterday and another one today! A nice big one - all my chicken girls are still laying fairly small, as they only recently started laying, so it was great to see a nice big egg. Problem is, the duck laid in the middle of the deep litter, in the middle of the coop, and it's the color of the deep litter. It's going to be like "Where's Waldo" with the duck eggs every morning.
