Tell me if THIS makes sense. I have 6 Australorps, hatched 04/15/12. I also had a rooster, but about a month ago had to cull him. He was getting very aggressive, both to people and the hens. He was from the same batch of chicks, so I forgave his hormones for a bit, but when September rolled around, I wondered. Was his behavior actually stressing the hens out? So, he went. The hens began being very loving to me, very quickly adapted to life without a guy around and proved to be very clever. They are free range throughout the day, but on very rainy and windy days, I keep them in. No eggs. October.... No eggs. I was beginning to think I had found the only 6 hens more interested in girls time. I was prepared to start a chicken sorority. Anyway, last week, I talked to my husband and we decided this was crazy. Feed, straw and maintenance all winter and we didn't have any eggs AT ALL? We knew about the weather and light and laying cycles, but seriously? I went out the next morning and gave them "The Talk". One egg, amongst the 6 of them, or they were done. That's all I was asking. Sunday afternoon I checked on them after a day in town and found my first 3 eggs!!! One was cracked, but the other two were fine! I was so proud and gushing over them. I excitedly looked the next day, and the next, and yesterday. No eggs. I laughed and told my husband they must have drawn straws, and one lost. I still consider myself waiting because if they weren't in the fridge right now, I would think I imagined the eggs altogether!

Is it wrong that I can't tell them apart

No it is not wrong at all. In fact when I saw the last picture, I thought for a moment it was my BR Spike. lol Very pretty girls!

I have noticed within the past week or so my BR girls have started sounding like big girls and not so much like little peeps anymore

Two of my girls, the White Rock and the Australorp, are really starting to cluck rather than peep. The others have lost the peep sound too but haven't really got the clucking down pat. I love to listen to them.

Okay I have figured it out

Peepers is lighter colored, Sadie has a darker colored patch on her back,and Lucy is the one that doesn't have a darker patch

when you really look at them it wasn't so hard to tell them apart

I do spend a lot of time with them but I never really paid attention to the little differences before! Thanks everyone for the tips

Hey,, you got it Crafty Duck!

It's getting super cold here... this weeks chore is to get the welded wire my friend put in front of the nesting boxes off so I can set them up and maybe the girls can start to get the idea! He attached it to survive a hurricaine, the staples I can't get out. I asked him to come do it! Maybe it's a bit too early. I don't want them sleeping in there, but they all go up on their roosts so maybe that woulnd't be an issue. just don't want them pooping and dirtying them all up.

Birds are wandering looking a bit bored,, with the freezing nights,,, surely no bugs around, and what was green is starting to look a pale grey. Going to maybe scatter some scratch more than once a week.

Anyone else out there looking to join us?

We may not get to many really cold nights out here we do get the occasional rain. High winds are normal for this time of year. I worked on the nesting boxes to give my girls the option when the time comes. A friend of mine doesn't do that. Her hens lay on the ground or in a dog house. I guess I want to spoil my girls Starting to get real excited about eggs now. I still let my girls out to free range if it is not going to rain. It is supposed to rain from Wednesday on throw the weekend for us. We still have bugs and new weeds coming up. But if I want to give them a treat I might give them some of the horses alfalfa. My chicks, I guess, are not chicks thought I still think of them that way... They will be 19 weeks old this week.... Wow does time fly
