Any other hawaiians out there?

Both. I'm taking it slowly though. The quail are my food safe deposit box for now. I have 15 birds, nine likely females and six males. Five males will probably be harvested before year end, and I'm hoping the ten eggs in the incubator will become chicks. It's been quite a journey.

Sounds like you will be eating well

I might end up raising quail if my neighbors complain about my rooster when he starts to crow. I have five hens that started to lay eggs, and two more that will start by end of month. They only make noise when they lay an egg and that's already past 8 am, so its not a problem. I bought a feather processor, so I will have fresh meat and eggs when I start the rotation. The roosters start crowing at around 3 to 4 months, but not all of them crow, only the dominant ones. They gain about a pound a month. I plan on harvesting the roosters when they start to crow, so they will be a little bigger than the small cornish game hens we see in the super market.

I've been thinking I may start raising quail  Don't tell my honey...
Howz raising birds in Honolulu? I imagine you have to be pretty stealth to not make huhu.
Oh, and we LOVE photos! ;)

Our house backs to farmland so no one has complained. Quail are pretty quiet compared to the chickens nearby. A couple of eggs to neighbors doesn't hurt either.

Farmland in Honolulu.... I'm thinking but don't know where in town but awesome convenient for you. It's good to have a neighbor who makes more noise with their chickens -that for the record, I don't think are as bad as most dogs- gives you someone to point at in times of trouble  Those darn chickens! Yes, I would imagine quail to be more quiet and manageable than chickens for sure. Like chicks that never grow up and stay in their coop, less noise etc, awesome!!! Make my big girls look bad for sure. We had quail when I was a kid but I don't remember much about them other than the hatch and eating. I did not care for the taste of a few other animals we harvested but I do remember quail being pretty yummy.
How are you doing with the whole Covid thing over there, you hanging tough? My MIL in foster V. has gone through her 4 stages of grief and is finally excepting a little better now, she is in her 90's so can not wrap her head around the pandemic as a whole consistently and is missing being able to go into the stores. Other family is laying low but ok. not a one in the visitor industry.

Cuz they are just so handsome I had to share, plus being good in this moment... ;)

That is amazing! One of the challenges of raising quail is that I had to learn how to build things. Here's my first coop/run. and a pic of the one "chosen" roo.

BTW, I live in Hawaii Kai near the high school. Most folks don't realize there are about a half dozen farms on a country road in the middle of the suburb. (There are actually more farms in Hawaii Kai -- that's just the section near the school.)

As for chickens v. dogs, dogs don't crow at 4am. Still, there's no one to complain to since most of the chickens are feral anyway, not as plentiful as Kauai, but we have them.

Oh I love that, super solid- OMG and soooo sweet!!! Bravo!!!
Well, the feral chickens and roo's definitely CAN be a pain... we have a lot of big Mango trees in my hood that is prime real estate so we get plenty... but I dono, I think the dog noise is bad. Maybe it is the layout of my hood? I do have a few neighbors with packs of hunting dogs and have little nice thoughts about their meal time and 0 about their breeding practices. Even though they are fairly far away something about dogs fighting in cages.... Then we have the late night guarding barks or the folks are out anxiety barking, sometimes nonstop:smack. It seems to be a repeated neighbor thing. Like 2 seperate families in the same house had dogs with the abandonment barking and a few hours non stop barking gets old. I would rather have chicken noise, though I do appreciate the protection of our 4 legged pals. I guess it is all a trade off. Definitely PEOPLE are the biggest noise makers hands down lol.

My chicken drink dirty water from the planter tray? I have clean water near the planter, but they don't care? I hope they don't get sick.

I lost my camera, its driving me nuts, I can't figure out where I left it?

I wanted to post a picture of my basmati brown rice sprout. I bought the rice from my super market and it sprouted in water. However, the ones I placed in dirt did not grow. Starting them in water seem to be the best way. Just need to change the water daily so it doesn't ferment. I will transplant them in my hydroponic tank latter.

I'll probably feed the rice to my chickens and use the dry plant to grow straw mushrooms. I haven't found a good straw mushroom strain online yet. I tried a few places, but failed.
