Any thoughts on breed and gender...age too

I should have also mentioned that you can use Moxidectin or Ivermectin to kill mites as well. But whatever topical treatment you choose, you must address the environmental problem as well - it is just as important, if not more so.
 
Oh dear :( Is it redmite you have?
I had them in a wooden coop a few years back and it was such a pain to get rid of, think they were gone and then suddenly loads would appear. After months I gave up and bought a plastic shed, I used wooden perches and found redmite under them this year though, but since changing to plastic pipe we are redmite free.
I also mix DE with a little water to make a thick paste to "paint" all the nooks and perch ends.

Other than that I agree with everything Tricoglossus has said

I've also used frontline for cats when I had some ex-battery hens arrive in the worst state and covered in lice, it worked so well and within 2 days the lice were gone!
 
Now armed with some spot on for this evening and also some permethrin spray. Shall be on attack mode with this and see how we do x
