Anybody have dumbo rats?

Dumbo eared rats are not any different ..physiologically... than Standard eared rats, so your basics are:

-A large wire cage ..suitable for proper ventilation and climbing
-A quality "lab block" for their staple food (Mazuri #5663 is commonly found in pet stores or feed stores, but Harlan Teklad is another option that you can find online)

At least..
-2 water bottles ..double bearing tubes don't leak.. with fresh, clean, PURE water (DO NOT add things to their water, ever!)
-2 hide houses/boxes ..for those "bad mood" days ..y'know, when "he's touching meeeeee!!!" ..is not acceptable

Treats can be plain Cheerios, fresh vegetables and fruits (check the RatGuide for safe and toxic lists), some cooked grains and cereals, quality dog kibble or biscuits, and so on. (I am pretty strict about what I give my gang ..in an effort to avoid skin problems and GI issues, as well as, considering preventative measures for Cancer ...and some of their typical geriatric issues ..like hip/hind end issues, etc. as they age). Just keep in mind, moderation is key!

And just in case, it's a good idea to have a jar of baby food or some Ensure or Boost on hand ..for those times when they need to take Vet meds and they don't like the taste.

Oh wow! Thanks for the info.

Dumbos are just rats with a recessive trait to make their ears larger and lower set on their head so that they stick out, imagine dumbo the elephant. I breed dumbos. I'm expecting a litter in 2 weeks of all dumbos in the colors: black, chocolate, russian blue, russian dove, black point siamese, chocolate point siamese, russian blue point siamese, and russian dove point siamese!

Are you thinking of Jumbo rats? that's usually a term used for a large feeder rat meant to feed a snake.

Okay, that Dumbo eared rat is freakin' ADORABLE!

I'm scared of rats... I have never had a friendly one. When they bite, it HURTS! I have had males, and for some reason they turn on me when they reach adulthood and snap at me and stuff...
Scary.

Have they been by themselves? I've had bad luck keeping male rats alone. It's the only time I've ever had rats that have bit. When they've been kept in pairs and trios and get out to play with me every day, they're even sweeter than my females.

Barnyard, I know you don't want to hear it, but I think you should do some more research before jumping into getting a rat. Go buy a rat book at a pet store and read it from cover to cover, and read articles online. There's a lot of valuable research out there. And it's not something cheap to jump into. A couple rats will need a cage that will easily cost more than $100. And the bedding and food really adds up monthly, trust me, even with a couple rats.
