Anybody having hard time selling chicks?

We have had people calling our home after they have gone to the feed stores and want more to go with what they have. Here this year but it seems only at Rural King and TSC they have a minimum that one has to buy. Rural King was 25 and TSC(Tractor Supply) was 6. They are saying it is the law but unless they have just changed it really it is just a selling thing because if it were law the stores would have the same minimum required...but again the law could changed but I have my misgivings

I hatch 40 to 50 barred rock every week, they sell for $3.00 each, and they sell out every week. Our auctions prices right now are the highest I've ever seen them. It's been an excellant hatching season in Tampa, I even took 10 peking duck hatchlings 2 days old to the sale, and got $5.00 a piece for them.

I desided to just keep them... maybe.

Last year we sold about 400 chicks the week before Easter and then had 200 left over that I like to have NEVER sold. I ended up keeping them and selling them as layers last fall. This year I have gotten rid of a lot of my chickens to get different breeds and have at least 5 people a day calling me for birds. I hatched out and sold 300 chicks in 2 days last week, but that's all I had because I have my new breeds hatching out for myself. I bet if I had 1000 chicks I could have sold them 3 times already.

Yeah I saw at TSC they had tons of chicks, either banties or standard... but they are 'mixed' you don't know what you are going to get from the bin. They had them for about $2. My neighbors bought 12 but know they are straight run and know they will get rid of any roosters.

I have pure breed silkies and I sell the chicks for $4. Either I sell 'em or I don't!? let my chickens do the hatching so I don't have more then 1/2 dz at a time. If they stick around until they are 2 months old, I have no problem or cost issue selling them later. But they will probably be about $8 then.... and if I have them until the lay.... they are $12.

I think you have to look for what is in short supply or in demand. In our area it is gamefowl. I have been working on raising some pumpkins and I have some mixed blood line American Games about to hatch. I also have OEGB BB Reds that I love and they eat next to nothing, but I will probably get rid of. They do not bring good prices like Serama do. Nobody around here is raising Cornish bantams so I am dabbling in those too. The BRs and RIRs that I have will be for eggs for breakfast and meat for the table.

As a buyer... I would like to see more "different" breeds... Our feed stores order from big hatcheries... mostly only common birds though...

There are no local people selling chicks here.. Only tons of people wanting to get rid of full grown roos... There is a lady down the street from me who sells a ton of chicks, but they are all mutts... Very cute mutts though...

I wish someone here had silkies...

I see a lot of adult roos at the auction whenever I go. I want a silkie but around here even the poorest quality pet silkies are going for $20 or more. Our feed store is sold out for the year already but will order for you if you order in 25,50,75,or 100 birds and you can do that yourself from a hatchery.
