Anybody having hard time selling chicks?

pips&peeps :

Yes, but only because of the weather. I don't have anything in the incubator because it's still so cold.

I have had e-mails and phone calls coming out of the woodwork.

Hi Jean!
I live across the state line over in Hayden. This winter doesn't exactly want quit quite yet does it?

All I can say is, "I'm cold."

I hope I won't have trouble selling chicks from my broodies this year--I'm probably going to have several more broodies and I always want to give them a few eggs. I'm about to post my BBS Orpingtons and Blue barred and Black barred EE chicks for sale. Hopefully, someone will want them! I sell the BBS Orps for $5 each and the others for $2 each.

A friend told me that grown chickens were going for about $20 each at the animal sales and flea markets outside of Atlanta. I have mine listed on craigs list for $3 and $4 each that are up to 1 month old. I was selling them like hotcakes, but it has slowed down this past week. Maybe closer to Easter you can sell them. TSC had 200
straight run rr's and sold in one day. THey had to order some more. But they had them for 1.89 each. Of course, if you could put them in a feed or hardware store on consignment you would probably sell them. But, you wonder if they will care for them while they are there , like you would.
Good luck. I get stressed out when I have over 30 chicks in the brooder, Those chicks wear you out feeding and caring for them, more of them, more work. I like keeping just a few for myself.

Hiya BBB,

Not sure how many chicks you are planning on but they are way different from domestic animals in that even with excellent care and very frequent handling, a lot of chicks still go through the 'teenager' days where they kind of naturally begin to avoid you anyway. Then, if you have bought breeds known for niceness, they come back to you after they begin to lay. I have 4 girls who frequently do the submitting squats whenever I am near them but the two breeds that are very well known to be nice tempered birds never have 'come back'.

The breeds that are being very clingy are my Gold Sex Link, my Buff Brahma, the Speckled Sussex and my Barnevelder. Who is about to turn 7 months and STILL no first egg!!! What do I gotta do to get a Barnevelder egg????

i listed 12 Black copper marans for 100.00 and they are all bevD and CanningG babies and can't geta buyer and they are ready to go,not sure whats up with this they are great french babies

Where did you try advertising them? Did you add a small summary about the bird's history and pictures of adults and chicks of the breed? Since they are not common, I would assume you need to try to make new fans of the breed in the same way that you became interested in them originally.

I was thinking about doing this locally, but im not sure if it would be worth my time, or if I will get stuck with a bunch of chicks if nobody buys them.

What do you charge for day olds?
1 week olds?
2 weeks olds?
3 week olds?
4 week olds?

I got a shock yesterday, the man that owns the feed store told me he would buy all I have for 1/2 of what he sells them for. I thought this was fair my wife took him a list and NOW he wants to charge less than what the hatcheries charge. And the hatcheries do not even have game fowl except for Cackle and they charge $8.00 a day old chick not including shipping. He wants to give $2.00 bucks apiece. A three month old drake he sells for $15.00 and he offers $3.00. It is his right to pay what he wants and what he buys but he should have never given his word. NOW I will sell them myself meet the buyers in the new TSC parking lot and he will lose business all around. Chicks bought from me and others are chick sales he loses. I will not even buy feed there anymore.
