Anybody here a libertarian?

No kidding - when I was in high school back before fire was invented, it was easier for kids to get drugs (up to and including cocaine!) than alcohol. The kids that wanted drugs just had to go talk to the kid that everyone knew was selling it - usually because his dad or brother or cousin was selling it, too.

I went to school in a town of 13,000 lest anyone think it's something that only happens in the city.

Far as I'm concerned, it being illegal did nothing to hamper the sales.

I guess it was knives.

Well, now I realize we live in different times, but I also believe times are different because we lack personal responsibility and do not allow our children to be responsible. Most here in my age bracket remember that most little boys wayyyyyyyy back then carried pocket knives, nothing unusual simply a right of passage when a young lad receives his first shiny new shrader, or his new boy scout knife.

When I was in school, the guys had their hunting rifles hanging in their truck, in the school parking lot....those where very difffernt times.

Okay, disturbing news...my daughter just came home and said they had sniff dogs go through the high school and middle school and found 3lbs of maijuana and 4 lockers had weapons in the MIDDLE SCHOOL. This is why I don't support leagalizing marijuana. It would be too readily available to our kids like cigs and beer. I used to smoke and quit when my 8 year old told me he wanted to be like me and put one in his mouth. That was it for me! DONE after over 20 years. The beer we drink isn't locked up and shame on me for not doing this...mental note...talk to hubby tonight!

lock it up? why not teach reponsibility?

Kid have no respect, and no one is bothering to teach it to them.
Just my opinion mind you.

Responsibility has been taught. I'm just not sure it was drilled in enough to resist temptation. I just know what my dh and i were like and i don't want my kids in this day and age to be mixed in with it. It was so different back then. It was so safe to have pocket knives, teachers drove to school and showed off their new shotguns to their students, and nobody got any twisted ideas. Kids got to walk around the neighborhood and not have other parents snicker and say you're a bad parent. Kids acted like Tom Sawyers and Huck Finns and sold lemonade and it was great. I feel like this generation has such a huge umbrella over them.

They do have an umbrells, we are so afraid of them doing something wrong, we as parents try to protect them from everything. We can't, they will learn easly with our teaching or the hard way. We over protect to the point of rebellion.
