I've been offered some white Chantecler eggs. The women is asking $25 a dozen. Is this a fair price? Any other info on this breed would be enormously beneficial as I need to make this decision by tomorrow.

Well, they are supposedly one of the very best cold climate breeds and I believe they are the only breed native to Canada. I am in California and I saw some young pullets last year down here and almost bought them because they were just so pretty. I believe they were the partridge variety. They are very pretty birds. But I'm kind of glad I didn't bring them home because it's really very hot down here and they might not have done so well. They lay big brown eggs and I think they are pretty good layers too. If I lived in the snow, I would definitely have some.

I have Partridge Chanteclers, and I LOVE them! I have been selling 6 eggs for $20, so I think I would snatch these up! I would love to have other colors, but the partridge are awesome too.

Being in Canada, they would be a great bird for you.

I have Partridge Chantecler eggs in the incubator. The eggs are not as big as those my backyard flock lay, some are on the small side, so I don't know about "big" brown eggs.

I did search for a while before finding hatching eggs, even had someone post at the Chantecler Fancier's website for me, and found very little. I was dealing with the extra complication of being in the US and having to get any Canadian eggs across the border. But still, if you have even a little interest in the White Chanteclers, you should not pass on this opportunity.

This site may be of use to those interested in the history of the breed.

Drom: I'm not sure "native" to Canada is quite right. They are the first breed developed in Canada (in the early 20th century). Partridge Chantecler and White Chantecler were developed independently, first the White in Quebec and then the Partridge in Western Canada.

Thanks everyone. This is great information! I will get the eggs and start to research the new breed. Now I am excited!
