anybody raise sprouts to feed the chickens?

Has anyone sprouted wheat berries? I would like to try, that and BOSS.
Hi, I have sprouted BOSS. First I soaked them in water for 24 hours.
Drained, rinsed and let them sit in the colander by the sink. Rinsed
3 times a day. A few days and the seeds sprouted. I wanted to eat them.
But the time it takes to take off the shells is somewhat slow.
I am going to look up if sunflower seeds without the shell will sprout.

Thank you Ginny! I think I will!

Sunflower, Mine were not dusty, not black and sprouted easily. Maybe yours got wet while awaiting sale. I had spoken with someone from the company before purchasing the oats to see if they were sprayed with any antifungals or antisprout compounds. They were not so I bought them, but without these sprays, they could be more susceptible to molds. I would try to contact the company and see what they say!! I found them to be very professional. Good luck!! ginny

X2. My PlotSpike has been sitting in my coop in an open bag for six months and is still perfect.

I don't know what Plot Spike Oats are but did you discontinue feeding? I don't know if I just don't know where to look but I'm having trouble finding anything except BOSS in smaller quantities. I put the BOSS 1/3 of the up in my kitchen colander, rinse well, leaving them in the colander, inside a bowl, covered with a dish towel and rinse at least twice a day. On the 3rd day, they are at least as long as the shell, sometimes longer. When I tried to get them to leaf out a little, most turned brownish. I leave them on the kitchen counter. My chickens love them. Sue

Sue, plotspike can be found at TSC, but in 50 Lbs(I think) If you are interested in sprouting other things, try a food coop(a health food store) Sometimes they will sell wheatberries and other seed in bulk and you can buy a few oz of some different ones. You can buy lentils in the grocery store. Look on the dried bean shelf. I have not done dried beans, but you can do them, but some birds don't like them.....Pearled barely won't work nor will split pea.

What does it mean when it's pearled? I noticed at our grocery in bulk foods there was something pearled. I thought I remember that we either use or stay away from it. I guess I needed more research. Thanks for replying. Sue

Edited to say I come from the old school where we fed Laying mash and watered twice a day. Then collected eggs. No naming. No sprouts, no checking 12 times in a day because one sneezed. Lol

If you are wanting smaller bags of sproutable grains try the wild bird seed, I don't know what the protien content would be, but it will have an assortment of sproutable seeds in it.

What would be the max protein I would want to be aware of or is it more important to not feed it often?

Your not going to over do the protein w/ sprouts. You can feed sprouts every day, they would naturally eat greenery everyday if they had access to it. The protein in the bird seed won't be as high as oat/wheat/ or other cereal grains so would not be a good replacement for chicken food, but a great supplement.
