Does anyone sprout corn for their chickens? I have an opportunity to buy corn at a pretty good price. I currently sprout wheat & oats, but haven't tried corn.
What does it mean when it's pearled? I noticed at our grocery in bulk foods there was something pearled. I thought I remember that we either use or stay away from it. I guess I needed more research. Thanks for replying. Sue
Edited to say I come from the old school where we fed Laying mash and watered twice a day. Then collected eggs. No naming. No sprouts, no checking 12 times in a day because one sneezed. Lol
Thanks Lacy Blues, I think I'll give sprouting corn a try!Corn likes it warmer and she says her birds really like them.
Pearling is taking the outside shell off. A seed without its outside shell.
WHAT!!!?? You only check your chickens 12 times a day??!! They are such fun aren't they. When I first got chickens and my father saw how much I was enjoying them he told me how much his father enjoyed having chickens!! I barely remember grampa having chickens.....
Now that we have poultry (chickens, ducks and the turkeys before thanksgiving), our backyard has become a destination for people who used to keep them or had parents/grandparents who did. It is a great memory experience to hear the roosters crowing and collect the eggs and listen to all the hens' gossip ... and let the turkeys take you on a tour of their territory (before Thanksgiving anyway -- I can't wait to get "keeper" turkeys in spring, they were SO much fun!).
Think of how "civilized" we've become in the last 50/60 years -- towns like my little farming community now have ordinances against keeping backyard chickens. My friends born in other countries keep telling me, "this reminds me of home!" There has been a big effort to get the "country" out of this Country, and I'm glad to see so many people working to put it back. It is healthier, IMO. Plus that, it's fun.
Here is a video my husband helped me to make it shows the basics of the burlap sack method I use to sprout grains for the chickens.
