Come on chickies.
I just candled the silkies that are going into lockdown tomorrow night. Seven out of nine still moving around. The other two are clear. I can't wait

OH MY!

Twenty-four hours into lockdown and I'm a little stir crazy.

I want to invent a hatcher with little carton-like stands that have LED-lit, fiber optic bases... so every time the heat light goes off my eggs will candle themselves. Oh, okay, I'll put it on a switch so the little guys get *some* privacy in there, but really:

I want to watch them as they start drawing all those veins into their tiny bodies!

I want to know if they are pipping at the right end.
I want....

Thanks for putting up with me!

I'm still a wreck. One pip, one little gal lying down with the shell just barely off her bottom, and 6 motionless eggs. Granted today is day 21 for the numbered eggs and tomorrow is for the letters, but the two active ones were both letters, so.....

A sweetie on this board sent me some BCM and olive eggers to set, and the darned PO broke all but 4! Plus, those four were *covered* in yolk, so I had to rinse them off. I didn't rub, but I'm terrified that I did something wrong by having to rinse them. Seriously, they were *dripping* from the other broken eggs.

No hatch, hatches are the hardest part. Seramas can be frustrating with the lethal genes and fertility weirdness that goes on. Set 25 and of those only ten viable at 18 and by 20 days - six hatch, one dies.

But they're so cute - so I'll keep trying to up my odds.

I know it's not the incubator - all of my own eggs hatched, five Dels, five barred/dels, two Sizzles, one Del/partridge rock. Of those three came from the eggs I broke. 3/4 from broken eggs is just cool. Only one of mine that was normal needed help - he was backwards and stuck and you could see his beak and his LEG over his nose (not a wing)through his pip - confused little booger. Pullet eggs can cause trouble.

I hate empty hatches but the OTHER hatches make it all worth while. And you only learn by continuing to try. If my zeroes had stopped me the other 150 chicks/poults wouldn't be around.

That's why I decided to go ahead and try again, this time with a borrowed hovabator. Yeah, I only got 4 BCMs from the eggs mailed/broke (and if they were just chipped/cracked I'd've tried to fix them, but the yolks were oozing out everywhere). But that's 4 to try. I asked some people on the Okie list on this forum if anybody had some eggs, looks like I've got a lead on some mutt eggs. If I can hatch any of them, the females I'll keep as layers, the males I'll provide the all expense paid trip to freezer camp.

I figure that I've kinda gotta try again, ya know?
