My son and I set some eggs on Sept. 12th, that we are using for his science fair project. He set 9 eggs that we had stored in the fridge and 9 others that had been stored regularly (room temp on countertop). The eggs are from our flocks of Blue Andalusians and Blue Orpingtons.
This is our first attempt at incubating, using a homemade incubator that my DH just built for us. We also had some issues with the thermostat, but decided to go ahead and see what happens. We've only been able to get it to hold a temp of 95-100 degrees F, but we did see some veining on 10 of the 18 eggs when we candled on Friday night. (Just to be sure, we left all the eggs in the 'bator, in case we simply missed some signs of development that might've been there.)
I wish the deadband range were smaller, of course; but I was told that we should still get a hatch even at the lower temps. We tried to get it to a higher temperature, but the dial is so touchy that we kept overshooting past 102. We finally decided to leave the high of 100 for fear of cooking the eggs.
Anyway, we plan to candle again on Thursday night, and then again on Day 18 (Sept. 30th). That should put our hatch on or around Oct. 3rd, but it could be a bit later due to the lower temps.
Glad to have people to share it with. Good luck to everyone!
