Anyone else feel like this?

How is a life of 4-8 weeks "wonderful"? How are You less dependant from the big corporations when You have made a habit of purchasing their product? All I see are fancy words and little substace
They spend the 8 weeks on fresh grass every day. They don't have their beaks clipped. They are fed in a responsible way and given vitamins so that they don't get heart attcks or broken legs. I beleive if you give an animal a life full of good moments, with one bad at one at the end, that is a lot different than the miserable lives they live in feed lots and on factory farms.

I have not made a habit of purchasing CX yet. This is my first run. Next time I plan to try and breed one's bloodline into my flock. Then all the meat birds I hatch will come from my own flock. AKA no dependence on the big corp anymore. Self sufficiency is a journey.

All I see is from you is an emotional response to a fact of life:lots of people eat meat. VERY OFTEN that meat is raised in an abhorrent way. This is not one of those times, and that makes me feel good.

You should get rabbits btw.

Also, because 5 acres, grow the chooks food, so you will not need awful tasting chickens. Broilers are bred for penny pinching capitalist s**m, they redirect all of the chickens nutrition into meat away from health, away from feathers, away from the ability to scratch and enjoy a life and THEY FORGET TASTE which is unforgivable too. One of my favourite chefs despises all the crap chicken sold in superkmarkets. He is a god of cooking. The crap they sell in supermarkets and fast food is nothing in taste compared to a real chicken, a real breed, after growing for at least a year or two.

I actually had rabbits last winter, and am planning for them again when I finish my barn build. Their meat was wonderful. We also have a 1/3 acre set aside for growing chicken food. It is a process, stewarding this 5 acres, but one I am committed to and working on.

For the 2nd time in my life, my freezer will be full of ALL home raised meat. The first time is when my parents filled our family freezer. This time, its my friends, as well as ourselves that will do it. One childhood friend raises beef. This fall, will acquire 1/2 a beef. A friend from college raises meat hogs. In one week, I pick up a hog. We provide the chicken. Let me tell you, there is nothing better! Yes, I realize we could easily raise all the stock ourselves. BUT, We are helping out other families and their little enterprises, and they are help us out!
I have 3 big freezers! They will be completely full come winter!
Let me tell you... the inner peace is AMAZING!

Yes! That's where all this ultimately leads I think. I haven't purchased meat at a store in at least 3 years. I have neighbors that raise lamb, pork, and beef and our family buys them by the whole or half and we sell chickens and turkeys to those same people. Buying a piece of boneless skinless meat on a styrofoam tray is completely foreign and unappetizing to me anymore. It's about community too. Keeping the money close and cycling it within the community builds up your neighbors, friends, and your general area in a way that buying from the big box stores is incapable of.

It took us, as a family, a while to get to this place.... I have always wanted this, my husband has always been on the fence. But, this spring, I didn't ask... just ordered. OH... I didn't need his permission... I just didn't want a year of whining when I pulled out certain cuts...LOL! (yes, he is slightly set in his ways... doesn't like a bone in anything... the dork!)
Now, he's talking about the tractors for next spring and where they should be placed. LOL! His own personal contribution to the pot is venison... when they dont "illude" him. :lau

It’s not even worth your words tbh. People like that aren't likely to change their minds. And besides, I feel like they might be a troll anyway. We all know you are doing a good thing. :hugs
