I'd LOVE to build a coop like that, but what happens when I have 2 feet of snow and a foot of ice with -20 degree windchills?

I hate cold and snow! I REALLY need to move south - it's 31* outside right now

Just cover the sides and top completely, then maybe have a tarp to cover the front at night? Mine will be in this all winter, but I'll have to cover it more than what it is now. Most of them sleep inside the dog house right now anyway, plus they have a heat light in there.

I believe some people have used plywood or similar for the backs, then used straw around the sides as insulation in colder climates. ChevyGirlBeth has a thread on hers, that's where I believe I read that at.

I've already decided that next year we are 1) either moving somewhere else or 2) clearing more land and building a big barn here. I've told DH I'm done with all these sheds and small coops and stuff. I want to have a real "homesteading" site. Growing up in NYC - I'd never thought I would say that!!! Today I even gave 2 RIR's a butt washing in my bathtub and then I blow dried their behinds. I will NEVER admit that in public - ever!

I'll have to take pics of my Rainbow Pullets that turned 8 wks old on Mon, Nov 16th. So far none are looking like roos. I gave away 6 to a friend at work and his wife who is a great chic Mom. Plan to rehome the rest for FREE as soon as I deside which ones to keep.

Let me know if any BYC folks from Pacific NW are interested in FREE started chics that had the Marek's shot.

Hoop House - My daughter and I put one together in two hours for my goats to stay out of the rain when in the backyard.

We first ziptied the two panels together over lapping by one section. Then attached the cattle panels to 12' 2 x 4's on both ends.

Then stood the thing up. Very hard to hold together, so we pushed it up against the shop so she could hold it while I attached the cross pieces with long wood screws. We then tossed it over the 5' fence into the backyard, covered it with a tarp with more zipties and bungy cord on the back side of the tarp that's attached to the fence to prevent it from blowing away, put a 5' x 5' platform made out of old fence boards to put food on and I got a shelter to keep them out of the rain. Someday, I'll get a longer tarp to cover the sides and put a back on it. (I originally bought the 3 cattle panels to make a chicken tractor which you could easily do by adding wheels.

Okay, I'm declaring Hickory and Thistle both roos. Thistle is getting so handsome and he is king of all he surveys. He and Hickory had quite the conversation this week. Hickory decided to teach Thistle a lesson and started pecking. Hickory started it, but Thistle sure finished it. He beat the snot out of a screaming Hickory (no blood) and then strutted about giving everyone the stink eye. He was so full of himself. I think I know who is gonna rule the barnyard.

Blackberry still has nothing but a pullet comb. I think she's just a feisty girl with an upright posture. I'm really hoping I only have the 2 roos.

They're looking good! Do you like the welsummers? I've always heard that they are really flighty. The Buff is beautiful! I love her colojr. and I must say that I love the park bench in the run. I've got one on my porch that never gets used.

I like the Welsummer pullet. She is very friendly and likes to free range. The roo is very skittish. I only have one Welsummer, the rest are brown leghorns, who are very curious and like to stay by the coop. I noticed at 10 weeks they started getting white on their earlobes if this helps anyone who was wondering about any of theirs.
