Anyone Else Raise Turkeys in Arizona

i live in higley/gilbert .
i have 1 choc. hen and am
looking for a male. other turkeys i have
are: black spanish, bourbon red, blue slate,
blue palm, royal palm, sweetgrass and fallfire.
almost all my turkeys came from porters.

the tom i have looks like the auburn turkeys that
kevin porter raises but it has both auburn and chocolate genes

What? That can't be right.

auburn turkeys are bronze based with a brown gene.

chocolate turkeys are black based with a brown gene.

If black based is dominate over bronze based.

If the turkey looks auburn it cannot carry the black based chocolate gene. It can have chocolate ofspring if bred to a black based turkey. The brown gene is sexlinked.

Did you also ask Kevin if it's possible for your turkeys to have both Chocolate and Auburn genes? Since you got the turkeys from somebody else, you really can't be sure of parentage (especially if the flock was running together) and you really don't know what your birds will produce. Just my opinion...

OmaBird, I really would love to hear what kind of feeder set up you have for the poultry... And how long does it take to feed all of those critters?

I don't think I have anything different than anyone else. I just have more of them. Maybe some are larger. I do have what I call a pasture feeder. It is a 6 ft long feeder than holds 50 lbs of feed. It looks simular to the long feeders for chicks. I also use lots of rubber tubs. I free feed so it does not take long to dump full bags in the feeders.

Here is some of the gang. All of these brids I bred myself. They are my own line.
