Anyone else Raising Chicks right now?

This late Winter, early Spring, I hope to acquire some standard Cochins. Want them for their broodiness and mothering

When do they stop being chicks? I have 3 month olds. Just went out to check on them. Water was frozen in the bottom of waterer so cleared that out. Have a 250w infrared on in the coop. They were still awake and pecking at their corn, peanut, sunflower seed block thing. Seemed happy. I'm still not convinced they can sleep with that red light on, or maybe they are just night owls......errrrrr night chicks? It's already dropped to 15F. Clear sky, beautiful moon, and it's supposed to go down to 6F. The ducks, bless their hearts, are fast asleep in their house, heads tucked under wings......so sweet.

It's 7F here right now & the chickens were asleep a Long time ago with the white lights on, lol. The ducks are the ones that have been up all this time. I was just out there a bit ago switching the lights over to red heat bulbs, hopefully that will help thaw out their frozen flights & tail feathers!

LOL.....my ducks just seem to pass out at night. Even when it's not cold, once they've put themselves to bed, I swear a tornado could hit and they wouldn't wake up. I am out there clanging around with gates and bolts and locks and peeking into their house with a flashlight and not even a head pokes up unless I quack at them, which I do sometimes to make sure they aren't dead! Chickens never seem to be asleep no matter what time I go out there.....

My son just informed me it's now 10F. GAH!

My broody is raising chicks for me

... first time mama is doing a great job - my 4 babies are 2.5 weeks old, and they are scratching around, trying to fly (mama is a Hamburg, babies are Australorps), learning to roost, learning what is good to eat... Mama is trying to get the chicks to fly up to the top of the hen house to roost like she likes to do, but they can't get up that high yet. Just hoping that she sticks at sleeping with them for a couple more weeks. Luckily for us, the weather is warm (been more than 30 deg celcius for the last few days) so the chicks are happily running around the big coop when the big girls are out in the back yard.

I have 16 inside right now, 2 incubators full due to hatch Fri or Sat, 2 more (smaller) incubators due the 29th or 30th.... And I'm picking up my ginormous brooder this Sat.

The inside chicks are two weeks and 3.5 weeks old. Some bantams, some LF. All adorable, of course. Oh, and 4 call ducklings!
