anyone feels bad for eating their chickens?

I had a vegetarian friend over and she was talking to another friend of mine who has "pet" chickens and raises others for meat. Veggie-friend says, "How can you eat chicken if you have some of them for pets? How does that make you feel?" Chicken-friend says, "Full."

It's mind over matter and it matters to my mind

I'd like to think I could since I do eat chicken, but I know I couldn't. I do dog rescue and have been asked several times if I'm a vegetarian. When I reply no the response is "But you devote so much of your time to saving animals...and then you eat them." Well, I've never eaten dog and certainly couldn't eat the ones that share my home. I suppose in desperate times I could. Just hope it never comes to that.

I thought long and hard about reponding to this post and I hope you find me coming from a respectful perspective. We have pet chickens... and dogs and cats and we would never eat any of them. We don't eat any animals actually, since we are vegetarians. I don't judge others and actually respect everyone's choice of diet. My opinion however, is that livestock and pets are human terms, but they don't differenciate the sentience of these animals. They still feel pain, suffer and fear death alike. Also, as we all know in this board, livestock and pets enjoy life and excercise their natural insticts alike.

I'm a zoologist and from a scientific point of view, many livestock animals are smarter than dogs (pigs for example). In laboratory settings, when dogs and pigs are given tests (puzzles, mazes, video-games, pressing levers for rewards, face-recognition, memory tests, etc.) pigs almost always beat dogs. Many people in the world have pigs as pets.

There are many countries in which they eat dogs and cats and consider this perfectly normal (Korea for example), many in which they eat dolphins (Japan) and others in which they eat great apes such as chimpanzees, gorillas and orangutans - they called it bush meat (in Africa and Asia). In India for example, cows are sacred animals and they think we are crazy for eating them. This is what we call moral relativism. We try to rationalize why we do things. People eat animals because they like their taste. Certainly, eating animals is not necessary for good health.

Thanks for letting me share my two cents... I really enjoy these boards by the way!!

I respect every ones feeling on this matter. It has come time for me to process my first roos in the next couple of weeks. I have been a vegetarian for 10 years now, but I tell you I am going to eat my birds. I try and let my birds have the best life I can give them. I understand if you do not want to eat or kill an animal. What is confusing to me is when someone says it is not OK to eat your own animals yet sits down to some chicken diner.

I think it is cruel to eat animals that come from factory farms. I find people are shocked that I would eat my own birds, but have no problem eating chicken from factory farms. I put people that have this double standard with the people that would rather buy eggs from the store rater than eat fresh eggs from their own backyard. To each their own. I know I will feel satisfied with raising my own birds and I even look forward to the taste. Been 10 years since I last had chicken. Need to come up with the best way to cook them. I will process my own birds because it seem to be the most humane way to me. I want my birds to have the least amount of stress. I want to be connected to my food. I think connection to our food would solve a lot of problems.

Agreed. Factory farmed animals endure abuse on a daily basis. If people are going to eat animal products they need to know where they food comes from. If I ever had to eat any meat as a matter of life and death, I'd eat my own chickens I guess.

While it will be at least another six months before we move to our new place and get chickens I know I have not got the fortitude it requires to end the life of a critter. 20+ years ago we lived on an acre in Missouri and had a goat. I was anxious to begin supplying our own meat and we decided to get a couple of rabbits for that purpose. Needless to say... we never ate a one, neither my ex nor I could even entertain the idea when the time came. And it's not like I'm not familiar with the process, dad was a hunter and it never bothered me as a kid.

I suspect I will, when the time comes see if I can find someone who can do the deed in trade. I could probably eat (and enjoy them) if I didn't have to go through the uh... harvesting process, and didn't know which bird I was actually eating. Not sure about my bf however, he's already said he WILL NOT eat one of the chickens so don't even try it!

I respect those who can and honestly wish I had what it takes, I believe it is a more truthful way of living and kinder to the animal to be raised with respect for their well being and the gift of sustance they offer us.

Me and my meaties are best friends we snuggle and talk and they follow and chase me around the yard, they dance and sing, and We tell cute little storys all the way to the Kill Cones. Num Num Num....
