Oh my...I couldn't agree more. We drove down to pick our birds up and found up they had accidentally mailed them the day before. Oh well...it was only a 3 1/2 hour drive each way...
They felt bad and let us choose 5 pullets or 5 exotics as compensation for time and travel and hassle. I ended up picking Marans, which you can't get as sexed out of the catalog, and they gave me an odd one I'm trying to figure out still. She was the only one of her kind in that brooder.
I could have spent another couple hundred dollars there, but with the birds we got we're already pushing the envelope as far as coop capacity. We have 12 hens, 1 roo, and then I brought home 6 pullets to go with the 30 that were waiting here. Actually 31...but one died the first night. She'd been kinda squashed in the box anyhow, and one lost from 37 isn't a bad deal.
They were very nice people and extremely apologetic about the mixup. My birds are beautiful and I'm going to have all kinds of colors in my yard, which is what I was wanting. I got Ameraucanas, Turkens, White Wyandottes, and then the Marans and the mystery bird.
As soon as they start laying my white layers are going bye-bye to the freezer. I've discovered I don't care for the temperaments of Leghorns or Leghorn hybrids at all. They're too flighty and sometimes downright aggressive. I'll keep my Black Stars and my one SL Wyandotte, and the roo, a Turken we rescued from Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. He's something else. I get a real kick out of him.
