Anyone get migraines?

Well, I read this thread the other day, thinking "I have debilitating headaches, but their not migraines, so I don't really qualify". But today, I just had to add...

Mine have been labelled 'tension type headaches' and I've had a barbituate pain killer since 1999 to knock them out. I do many of the things you all mention here: hiding my head under a pillow, lots of caffeine&Ibuprofen&asprin, taking 2 days off from life....

At the dr. today, it was suggested they might be tension triggered migraines....I was given a sample of both Maxalt and Axert, so we'll see if either of them is helpful. I'm very hopeful that one will make a difference!!! :)

The bite-splint suggestion is intriguing, and one I might have to look into, too....

sure sounds like you qualify to me

I personally do not, but i watch my husband go through it. I feel so guilty that even a bad headache.....i take a few pills and its over. I have learned through him how lucky I am.

This really HAS been an informative thread...
I remember the head ice paks...I wish I had stocked up on em...
I've also alternated ice paks and hot paks...and I have used HeadOn for the baby migraines and I have another thing I bought at bath and body that has Peppermint Oil and Eucalyptus Oil for regular headaches.

I forgot to mention that certain types of scents are migraine triggers for me....does anybody else have this problem? It's the synthetic scents that bother me. I was in Stein Mart looking for some clothes and I walked by somebody that was so heavily perfumed I thought I was going to die on the spot. At first I thought there was a broken bottle of perfume on the floor, then I realized it was that woman.

The man that cuts my hair is so ultra-sensitive to scented perfumes, soaps, lotions, etc. that he has a big sign on his shop's door asking patrons not to wear the stuff. It seems that every couple of months somebody forgets and he gets violently ill and has to be off 2-3 days. Its so hard on him because he's self-employed and missed days of work = no money.

HenC,
its not just the synthetic scents for me. I had a headache at work and a co-worker insisted on annoiting me with rose oil. My rotten headache passed rotten at record speed and I spent the entire evening in bed wishing the top of my head would blow off, at least I'd feel better. The scent of rose oil still bothers me.

Oh, yeah! Scents will set me off for sure, tho not as much as they used to. Even had to watch deodorant, shampoo, dish soap, lotions, etc. Never liked to wear colognes or perfumes (thankfully). Certain stores that carry candles, or soaps; the smell of burning incense, room deodorizers. Natural food stores are the worst for me.

I honestly believe that for some people everything is a trigger for starting them, OR their body is out of whack and is creating them. I have the Mirgrain problem and have had a lot of battles with it. I Used to hit the tylenol and iburprorfren but they keep my head aches running in a circle. I finally went to a good doctor and she put me on a Migrain preventive I take two pills every night before I go to bed. And they work great I no longer get them as often, or as sever. The other Med. I am taking for the relief of a migrain is Maxalt. It looks like a little round piece of styro foam. I put it on my tongue it disolves and then I relax for a while and I am good to go again. I am not saying the prescriptions are the only option, but some times they are what actually helps. And for people who get them a lot really need to go get it checked out by a Doctor. And it is very hard to actually find the things that trigger a migrain. It takes a lot of journaling and record keeping of all the things you do, were you go, and what you eat. Anyway thats my two cents on the subject. I didnt actually read everyone elses posts yet I was actually only stopping by to give you all a quick check and instead you went and got me on a roll. Anyway hope you are getting well and getting it all figured out.

I have about 30 years of migraine experience (except for 4 years during and after my first pregnancy). They are most normally tied to my hormone cycles, or during extreme times of stress.

Things that help: drinking and (sniffing) jasmine tea, going to bed with a hot water bottle and falling asleep. Aromatherapy has worked for me (jasmine, blue tansy). Also have had some success with rubbing the front of the neck area from throat to chest (reflexology--moves lymph). As a preventative during period time, I take milk thistle capsules, which help the liver eliminate toxins.

And for the person that admitted throwing up to feel better, you are not alone sister!

When my migraines are brought on from stress/tension, usually taking an Aleve or two at the first sign of it coming on will keep it from getting really bad. Other than Aleve, I have never used a medication that worked at all. And the Aleve will not help if it is hormone related.

Seeing this thread reminded me that i forgot to re-post on the subject. I would like to thank everyone who shared their experiences with MAXALT. I saw so many people post about MAZALT being helpful, So i called our family Dr. and got a few for my husband to try. My husband has suffered for almost 30 years with migraines. He has seen many Dr's and tried many meds. His first migraine after getting MAXALT started while he was at work and it had 4-6 hours to strengthen before he got home. He took the pill and within 1/2 hour......it was down to a very tolerable ache. The med was very draining and he would never be able to keep working after taking one, but at least the suffering was over. He is so grateful to have learned of something that really helps his migraines. So thanks
