The trains run on time and often and go everywhere and are easy to understand, but I'd vote for a car too! Indulge yourself on the breads and cheeses. Almost everyone speaks a little English but for reading signs- especially while driving- know a bit of German.
The big thing is that Europe in general is not that large an area. For those of us in the huge USA, superimpose a map of Europe over the USA and see how close everything really is.
Oh.. and if you can get a flight with a stopover night in Iceland, I recommend it!

I believe that the clock I want is a Verge and Folio Clock kit. It uses rocks for the clock weights. Several of the stores in Triberg, were selling the kits in 2004. I have not been able to find the kits online. I am going to give you a like to Google Maps, that shows where there is a clock museum. Just a little north of the museum is the towns of Triberg. I expect that the kit will be between 150 and 200 dollars. So we will need to work that out. I do know that the clock I bought in 2004 has nearly doubled in price. Even the less expensive clock I bought is Austria in 1982 has become more expensive. I need to replace the clock works on that one. The clocks need to be cleaned a lot more often than I have managed to do over the years. It costs nearly 100.00 to get it cleaned here, and it means driving into the downtown area of the city. I just need to learn how to do it myself.

Oh gee, almost forgot! Unless you specifically request and reserve, the rental car will be a STICK shift. For fun, you can rent one of those smart cars for two - easier to park! Brush up on the driving rules, especially for the autobahn...still no speed limit outside the cities!!!! And the rental company will charge you up the kester for speeding tickets - automatic cameras everywhere. Make sure your credit card covers the car rental insurance, it's practically guaranteed a nick or two. Or like DH, sent in an ice storm...oops.

As for sauerkraut, I like it. Every once in a great while, I will decide to eat a hot dog, just to give me a reason for eating some kraut.
It's kind of sad because I don't really like the hot dog part of the experience. Polish sausage is slightly a better option.
We lived in Germany when my husband was in the Military. Try Rothenberg, its one of the oldest surviving cities in Germany and remained undamaged by the WW's
Don't be surprized, but every week someone finds unexploded bombs from WWII. A big one made it to the metal recyclers, and blew up the building when it got shredded - no one killed. Saw that on the news in October this year.
