We got cornish cross in yesterday, lost one on the way. The rest were a ok. We gave them all a booster, water and food. The first feeder we tried was a long red one that had a closed off top with holes for them to peck through. They got stuck inside it so we removed it and put in another kind of chick feeder, a found one with a red bottom, and white top with prongs sticking out to make little sections of food for the chicks. It was wotking well for several hours, but the next time I checked on them I found a chick pinned under the prongs on it's side, still alive. We cafefully got it out and it was still a little responsive so we made sure it got some water in it and put it in a smaller box in the brooder to rest with some water and food. It was really weak the whole rest of the day and died some time over the night. Has anyone had this happen with cornish cross and chick feeders? We put a shallower feeder in for them after that.

I have never had a thing like that happen. Maybe you could post a photo the the feeder that caused this, so the rest of us can avoid having that happen to other chicks. So Sorry about your lost chick!

It'll only be used for our older chicks now since their to big

I had one burrow under the feeder we had in the bin with them and die. It was our first batch and I heard them fussing that morning but figured they were just figuring out some sort of pecking order and didn't go out. I felt terrible but sometimes bad things just happen.
I've never had the meat birds but I don't see how they could possibly even get stuck with that. Maybe try one of the more open designs like this. https://www.farmandfleet.com/products/g--4458-little-giant-plastic-hanging-fowl-feeder.html

Chicks are rather notorious for finding ways to get stuck in things and killing themselves, unfortunately. I don't see anything obviously wrong with that feeder, but it sucks to lose a chick in such a fashion.
I totally agree. Had lots of chicks getting into trouble this year. It's frustrating at times. Wish they wouldn't though.

The chicks try and get ALL the food, they get in the feeder and scratch it out even @ a day old. That is a very popular feeder I see advertised all the time. Thank you for the warning and the photo!:he Chicks can be frustrating sometimes!

Sadly, meat birds aren't bred for their intelligence. I usually provide food in an open dish or just spread out on paper towels for the first couple days for chicks, because they are so wobbly to begin with. Then switch to a proper feeder as their legs get stronger. Mind you, I rarely have more than 6 at a time. This may be impractical if you have dozens.
