when was lockdown? and have you candled yet?

Lockdown was Sat. the 2nd. I candled before lockdown and I know some of them where not good but I put them in anyway. I am still not 100% good at candleing and didnt want to toss a good egg that I thought was bad. Every thing has been reading good and everything is calibrated, but today the tep. and humidity are jumping up and then down then up again. IDK what to do now but just go buy some chicks.

I agree with latebloomer..you can try the floating idea..or, just go ahead and pip the bottom, clean away the hollow part, up to where hopefully you hear peeping. You can touch the baby right away, to see if it is alive or not..if it moves..dampen the membrane with a clean paper towel. You will see the veins, if they are real plump or not. Plus, you will be able to see the beak better with it damp. Clear an opening for the beak if it is alive. Let is sit for a while. I find when the chick starts peeping lots, it's getting closer to the time to hatch. If I have pipped one too early, it usually doesn't peep for a while. I just let them sit for 6 hrs..then work a bit more. Usually by then, it is starting to chirp.
Good luck, I hope your baby is ok!!

Well thank you Cynthia, that helps a lot. I have the humidity right around 80% right now (it went up after the last one hatched) but it has been hovering around 75% so far since lockdown. I have been opening the vent plug a little at a time to let air in and I may have possibly opened the incubator just about 1 centimeter to let some air in and take a good look at the babies. Never affected the humidty and the last egg was on the other side. I just had to see them

I will probably see how the egg is doing tonight and if there still is nothing, I may just snatch the little buggers one at a time if they are all dry by then.

Well 9 out of my 11 in the bator have hatched. 1 died at hatch and there was a lot of blood?

I went to check on my two 9 month old BO's in the backyard and I think 1 might be broody?

She pulled a bunch of feathers out in the nestbox yesterday and today put her head feathers (usually the friendliest one) up at me when I went to check on her. I took the 2 eggs from under her and she continued to stay. I pulled her off the box and put her back in the yard. Any ideas?

Congrats to all with new

So, I just had a strange thing happen. The 2nd of my chicks to hatch this morning was a bit bloody, and the tisue connection to the egg did not release. The Navel? is about a half inch long and haning from the back of the chick. Initially it was wrapped arund the foot. I removed the chick and slid the foot out from the tissue loop. should I remove(snip?) the tissue tail, allow it to dry naturally and fall off, or cull the chick? ANy ideas? Thanks

there ya go! I definately had a couple that need intervention. They were in a completely different position than the other ones...they were all deformed when they finally came out of the shell from being in such a weird position. They did not have the strength to push against the shell I don't think. I made enough room over a course of many hours and they were finally able to slide their bumms out. Congrats and good luck with the rest.

okay so the chick that was upside down in egg seems to be pipping up the egg instead of around the end. is it possible that the chick is in there sideways?

Thanks Avalon, I am going to give it a while and see.

On another note, ChevGrl, I saw your Lao Tsu quote, and immediately went and got out the Tao Te Ching. Great wisdom for moments such as these, and all moments really.
