Hope you don't mind my jumping in!

We have 11 eggs under a silkie out in their little coop. Today is their hatch day, we got some white silkies eggs, to go with our black blue and splash silkies that we already have. Just waiting for my daughter to wake up to go check to see what we have this morning. We have candled a few and think we should have a good hatch.

Almost a couple weeks ago there was an egg beside Careless the broody hen and my daughter scooped it up and stuck it under her, thinking it was one of hers, well now there are 12 eggs under her so trying to figure out what I will do cause that egg is probably started. Hoping my sisters chicken is actually broody, and she is going to get some eggs to slip under her and I will send mine to her house. Looks to be one of our favorite chickens egg Goldy, supposedly an americauna.

Will let you know what happens! Keep your fingers crossed!

We have a pip, kinda scared, always have had great hatches with our own eggs, these that I got were from just down the road and the people have a great reputation but she had tried to move her white roo in with her buff hens to get me a mix of colors, but once she moved in the roo, the hens stopped laying. So she just gave me the eggs from her white hens.

Its been in the 30's here at night so last night I went to Petco and got a 100 watt red heat lamp to warm up the little coop just a bit and noticed there was condensation on the window. I am thinking that the heat lamp is hitting some wet straw and making condensation, hope I didnt drown the eggs. Ughh

Good luck with your hatches, the end is always the worst for me, the waiting and wondering and thinking of things that could be wrong. Silkies make great broody's, we love our girls.

If your broody is like mine she won't stay put long enough to hatch out that last egg that was accidentally put under. I currently have one lonely egg in the bator because, my hen decided she was gonna lay her eggs on my broodies eggs when she would eat.

Good luck. If your sis has a broody that would probably be the best way to go.

So at what age do you let your broody and her babies mix and mingle with the other hens and roo????

It seems its about 5 or 6 weeks that they mix and mingle, although they are right next to each other the whole time. Then the hen forgets her motherly instinct and is kind of mean to the babies, Then Joe the daddy silkie rooster steps in and continues to teach them and they all sleep under Joe. Its really very sweet how he takes care of them. now its the end of the day and zero activity, maybe my count was off, but I don;t know. Starting to look on craigslist for baby silkies that I can put under Careless so we can move on. Hoping for babies tomorrow.....
