Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

Well my chicken peeps.... Many of you will remember that my sons dog had dental surgery last Wednesday.... With many biopsies sent to the lab.

Lab work is back and the news is the worst possible. Malignant cancer with a few months at best. He won't eat so I do not think we have months.... More like a few days to a few weeks.

If I seem a bit off or ghost for a while I am sure you all will understand.

Oh, I'm so sorry... that really sucks. :(

My heart goes out to you guys. Have you tried pureeing stuff in a blender for him? Like chicken and rice, beef and rice with water. that may make it a little easier for him to eat.

Also (I used to be a vet) you can ask your vet about putting him on pred. I used to to do that for terminal cancer cases. It won't cure anything, but will 1.) buy him maybe a couple of weeks to a month or so 2.) make him less painful, and make him feel better and 3.) stimulate his appetite and thirst, thus giving him fluids and nutrition.

Someone suggested Tramadol, but I wouldn't recommend that unless it was an adjunct to pred, if pred wasn't relieving all/most of the pain. Reason being, Tramadol doesn't have the antiinflammatory and appetite-stimulating properties of pred and will just make him sleepy although it will relieve pain. At this point, if you're not gonna go chemo/surgery/radiation (which costs a fortune and may not even be a viable option) there is really no reason not to do pred.

Hope this helps, so sorry.:hit

*The discreet undergarment for easily embarrassed hens.

Posting this here too because I am not a highjacker

Something to focus on while breaking a broody Buff. :he:he:he

Trying to make her stretch her legs a bit.

She's temporarily out of chicken jail, wearing a diaper , and being forced to follow mearound and watch me clean house.:barnie
I'm trying to show her that being a mother isn't all that it's cracked up to be!!!!:th
:lau:lau:lau
Omg. Sometimes I crack myself up.
What are you using for a diaper? It looks like a mask the dentist uses. Does it hold the poo to close and get stuck in her feathers?

It is hystericaly funny!

It is OK guys. He is on both pred and tramadol as well as an antibiotic for the tooth.

My son is coming to terms with the very difficult decision he has to make.

Friday will be nearly a week of no food intake. He is of course weak and may not even make it to Friday. If he does hang in there that long we will be saying goodbye then.

:hugs It is OK. It would have happened sooner or later. We simply live longer then they do.

I do not wish to hijack or drag down what has been a very lively and fun thread about forest beasties. :)

You all have been a very kind group and I appreciate every bit of it. :hugs

I will be here but likely in the background for a while. :caf

So sad. I hate cancer, I particularly hate it in our pets, it is heartbreaking. It's the worst diagnosis for a vet to have to give and the worst for a pet owner to get. They are like our babies. I am crying for you 21hens....I had to put my sweet baby Abby down myself 6 years ago, she was only 6. Metastatic cancer. I still cry over her.... :(

My heart is with you, your son, and your pup.

@theuglychick

First of all, I nominate you for best username on BYC.

Second, this is where I confess I've played with the idea of starting a feral flock of chu, but never had the nerve for a variety of reasons. We've had a few that showed promise, but I just can't NOT protect them, the mama hen instinct (and meddling human one as well) is just too strong. So I was instantly intrigued by your thread. Thanks for keeping us updated. I really hope you make contact.

Third, there is no way I have time to read all this, so I'm going to run, very quickly. Thanks for posting.
