Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

So, I went to my friends house to pick up a former hen. All her hens ran off except the 3 that knew me (my 3). I picked one out and brought her home. Poor Sesame is still so scared. They bumped chests and Sesame ran off hiding. She is still so scared! I swear she has PTSD! So, I am taking the other sister back and hopefully Sesame will take to the 16 bantams when they get older.

She is watching her sister as I let her out of the crate.
Poor Sesame! :hugs
She reminds me of my dog Olive when we first got her. It took a good 2 years for her to not be completely scared of her own shadow. Actually we used a lot of treats & clicker training to encourage her to not run away & engage with us & then with other people & dogs.

Maybe you could integrate her in a separate fenced area & give her treats every time she even looks in the direction of any other chickens.

Vet update on Vinnie.

Four hours under anesthesia, 1 tooth lost :woot, but several tumors found :(. Samples and biopsies sent to the lab.

I had feared he would lose most of the teeth. Unfortunately what I was seeing in the mouth were ulcerations and possible cancer. When they found that they did a whole body work up. There are other tumors they sent samples from on the other end.

At least he is still with us. I will be his caretaker during the day since I am home.
Poor guy gonna be hurting for a while.

He is a tough one for the vet to examine. He is all Malamute and despises going to the vet. They kind of dread his visits too. :hugs I get it lol he is all ggggrrrrrr the whole time even in a muzzle.
I am super glad he made it through such a long knock out. Of course my son was beside himself all day.
I anticipate a grumpy dog for the next few days.
And poor Vinnie!
My friend who lives in CO had a dog on medical marijuana to help ease his suffering. Her vet prescribed it for him.

He and you and your son will be in my thoughts & prayers.

My dog Olive had 3 dental surgeries since we got her 7 years ago. Whenever the pizza or UPS delivery guy comes, we joke that they shouldn't be scared by her barking. The worst she can do it gum them.

She also has that sucked-in lips look that folks have when they take out their dentures.

I feel bad that Sesame is all alone. Unless she has cancer or something not visible, I have no clue why her 3 coop sisters all turned on her. It has been 2 months, Sesame is all healed, has confidence again and I figured I would trying bringing one hen back thinking it would go well. Nope. Even that one was still out for blood (without the other 2). Oh well.
Sesame has 16 chicks in the coop she hears and can see. That will have to do until they get grown. I hope they all can make things work!!!!! Sesame isn’t fond of those chicks right now, but that is normal I suppose.
I found a good article on cockerels. I have one Bantam Cochin cockeral for sure and I am thinking 2 Silkies cockerels (guessing by the way they are treating each other). Fun times!

You must not have had a brother...
I have 3 brothers and as teens our home became the home of unwanted teen boys. My brothers friends stayed w us all the time, esp in the summer. One day my brother's friend was sleeping on the porch & I thought What's that smell?! I thought my cat had killed something.. Nope.. it was that guy's feet. We'd spray his feet w/ lysol while he slept. At least he was outside though. So glad I have girls, at least they have shame.

I just had to share this pic of my coop. I title this phone 'This is why we can't have nice things'. I got a bale of straw and put it in my coop... apparently it's very interesting b/c they shredded it and tossed it all over the floor. I shove it back over, they pull it back out. smh.. Worse than kids. Keep getting it in their water dishes. I'm going to get a tote to stuff what's left of it in so it won't get all poopy. I have another bale in my trunk that's going to be staying there since they can't handle it.

:lau Oh gosh mine are the SAME way. Ridiculous.

Last fall I tried to do a cute hay bale with pumpkins on it decorating my porch- the chickens shredded the hay all over the porch. Now they try to ruin all the other animals hay as soon as we get it off the truck! :barnie

I feel so much better. I'm was telling them how other chickens would be much better behaved. As I was digging their food dishes out and thinking about how my bantam hadn't laid in 4 days I started to worry that maybe she had laid, but her egg was buried in the piles of straw & that I may step on it. I think she's just stopped laying (unless she's suddenly started hiding them), but maybe bantams are more aware of the shorter days.

I completely agree with the bad teenage boy smell! What is it with boys and stink? I’m constantly telling my 16 year old son, “go take a shower....put on deodorant!”
I got a good laugh at your “this is why we can’t have nice things”. A year or so ago I saw a t-shirt that said “I’m the reason we can’t have nice things”. I almost got it for my son, as he seems to break everything around him without even trying. I wish I would have bought it because now I can’t find it again. We wanted to get some new furniture but decided to wait till he graduates and moves out so that it can stay nice! He’s one of those boys who would still be living in your basement playing video games at age 40 if you let him! When he was in 4th grade, I asked him what he wanted to do when he grows up. (At the time we lived in Chatanooga, TN.) He said, “ I want to be one of those guys in the Target parking lot with the signs.” When I realized he was talking about people begging for money, I just about died! A few years later, he said he wanted to get married and have his wife work so he could stay at home and be a manny (man-nanny)! Luckily he is a bit better now, but not a I’m hoping he will continue to outgrow his lack of motivation.....and his nose blindness!
