Anyone have luck catching a feral chicken?? UPDATE: Rooster caught, no hen

I know! Wait until close to Thanksgiving, then claim you were confused about the type of turkey(s) you supposed to buy! And if he argues, remind him that fresh is always better than frozen anyway.... nothin' fresher than a box of turkey poults!

Well, I got a HUGE deal on turkeys last year, and after giving away some, we still have 3 in the freezer. We don't do the holiday thing... no Thanksgiving (DH and his family are Cherokee) and, with it just the 3 of us, we don't cook a holiday meal for Xmas either... well, we make tamales... don't ask... we spent too long of a time stationed in El Paso... (smh)....

I eat turkey all the time.. used to have a store that would quarter the frozen ones for me around the holidays.. I would get 3 during the season... they are no longer in busniss
much easier now that I have my own....I put each leg quarter in a bag and cook the breast... put some cooked breast in the freezer... and it's just me lol

Wow! That must have been quite the deal! We live in New Mexico and my husband LOVES tamales for the holidays. I didn't grow up here so I don't really get it

We do too, though I usually just buy a frozen turkey breast. It's just me and my 2 kids & my younger one had/has a chicken allergy. She'll eat chicken, but it causes her problems sometimes. So for a while there I'd cook a turkey once a month & use it in soup a couple times, turkey rice & for a turkey dinner. I'd consider raising our own turkeys, but I know my kids wouldn't eat it, and if they did it'd just go to waste b/c we don't really eat that much.

I don't get it either... but we were there for 7 years and it became a habit.... no joke... I am a white white whiiiiiite girl..... (think irish, nordic, snow white, etc), and DH is french canadian and native american.... yet, every year, like friggen clock work, I start jonesing to pull out my HUGE steamer pot to make tamales.

I totally get the ethnic food for holidays thing. A lot of my family is from Texas but we're all in MO now. We're a mix of German/Scottish and Native American. Hubbs is Dutch. And for Christmas last year we had tamales and enchiladas- thanksgiving is gonna be a Mexican food event this year also! :lau

Yup!! Talking about it now... I am actually thinking on where my pot is... and whether it would be OK to start the tamales a little early this year. We don't mess around here. Go big or go home is about our family motto... so we'll probably make a good 500..... they get frozen... but never seem to last to St Paddys Day!
