Anyone have theory why roosters respond to hen's egg song?

They all just like to yell. :D

Have you ever had one of those times when all of the chickens that have just gone to roost in the coop start hollering for some reason? Sometimes I can't help myself and start bwacking along with them, and then that really gets them going. It's really hilarious.

Not all roosters rush to a hen that is singing the egg song but some do. They do not need to go escort her back to the flock, all they need is to crow or another hen may call so she knows where they are. But a hen that is laying needs to be laying fertile eggs. Usually if a rooster rushes to a hen that has just laid he will mate her. Not always but often. I think his action is more about making sure a hen that is actually laying is fertilized.

What RR says. I believe a hen is more "accessible" for breeding after she's laid an egg. My EE roo is quite the family man. when flock are out free ranging, he spends all day long accompanying the gals to and from the nest box. He also spends a fair amount of time in "nesting" behaviors. He'll scout out a nest spot, and fluff it up, all the time doing his little chuckle clucks. He often has quite the audience of hens/pullets standing around and observing. One day last fall, I observed him climb under the coop steps. He did his nest fluffing, and chuckling. One at a time, the girls would hop into his little nest and cuddle with him, then... she'd leave after a few moments, and an other one would join him.
