Anyone impatiently waiting for your baby chicks to arrive?!?!

I ordered from a hatchery in order to hopefully get just hens, although I know it is not 100% it is a better chance than guessing at the chicks in a straight run bin.

I totally agree. I can't really order from hatcheries though because the minimum order is more than I can do at the moment. The good thing about where I am getting them from, they only order "sexed" chicks, no straight run bins. But, even so, the hatcheries only guarantee 90% accuracy. My first batch of chickens were BO's and out of six I did end up with one boy. That place did order sexed and straight run, so who knows if any got mixed up or I just was one of the lucky ones to get the boy mixed in with the "sexed" girls. I hope all of yours are girls too :)

I get my chicks in one week today!!!! Can't believe it!! I've never even held a chick before and have zero experience, but 10 little chicky-poos will be arriving shortly... Aahh!

There are a few hatcheries that do not have a minimum order. Mine are coming next week and I only ordered twelve, but I could have ordered as few as i wanted dut to Ideal only having a $25 minimum order.

Well, I gave in and got 6 Welsummers from TSC. And, while there, I got talked into 2 Silkies...they were only $1 each because they're starting to molt. I never planned on Silkies, so we'll see how this goes.

So, now I'll have 30 chicks by the end of this season. Some will be roos and will be dinner (we are keeping one Buckeye roo from the Lay line), but it's a good thing I have a huge coop!

. The lives of my poor babies have been left up to my college son! He is awful at texting back and It crazy because we brood outside on the screened porch. With the crazy weather we have to adjust the heat lamps throughout the day. All i can think of is fried chicken

And I needed chicken food...... from the coop....... they had babies....... and......somehow 7 appeared in the truck... I drove away fast ( after getting the food of course).

awwww, silkies are so cute :) I cant have any (I don't think anyway) because I don't heat the coop and I don't think they would do well with the negative temps I get here.

Oh cool. I'll have to keep that in mind next time I get more :)

Welcome to the world of chickens! They are so great. You'll get the hang of it quick.
I was the same way. Never held or ever near a chicken before but now I can't imagine not having them.
What kind are you getting? And remember to post pics when you get them.

Just make sure that they have enough room to get away from the heat if they get too hot.

Quote: Thank goodness I do. Well, His roommate had come home with him this weekend. He was checking temps for me. So that was not so bad. The older chicks in another brooder, ran out of water and almost food. Guess I should have reminded him of that, at least they are about 3 weeks old so they survived. I did tell them before I left to feed them after lunch. I though that would have been enough. I had a little talk with the son last night. UGH!

Thanks for the reassurance!! I'm getting 10 brown layers, and will for sure post photos when they arrive. Got my brooder ready to go yesterday!
