Yes, he lives or was running down the hill to a swamp area and there are lots of lakes around here. Very interesting, never heard of one of these.

Mrs.Puff :

That's a groundhog. They were there first, not you. I really can't get over people wanting to blast away at wild animals simply because they are inconvenient for their landscaping plans.

That is just plain mean.
I used to have two that lived under my house, and they did absolutely NO DAMAGE to anything!

Here's some rules from the Forum Rules

*Dealing with predators and pests is not always pleasant. Although sometimes hard to do, please be as sensitive as possible when explaining procedures and results. Some younger members and/or squeamish adults will appreciate it.

*Although some ways are not considered ideal to some, it serves the purpose of removing the offending predator. If you have an idea or a helpful comment, please do reply. If it is a sarcastic comment about the disposal or capture of a predator, please keep your thoughts to yourself. We are not here to judge one another on methods or ways and means.

PS, the average lifespan of a groundhog is relatively short, so chances are, the people and livestock were there 1st.

haha I like the mother-in-law idea. So should I have my kids use the hole as a urinal. Oh the boys would love that! Dog hair is another good idea! Thanks. As of now, he is staying in the swamp area and not bothering us besides that one hole. I can't get over the red teeth if it is a nutria.

it is indeed a groundhog... he wont bother your chickens i live on a 75 acre farm and we have had chickend the whole 9 years and where the chickens stay the groundhogs are not far maybe about 5 or 6 feet and we have never once have had a problem!!!

It's a muskrat.

Woodchucks/Groundhogs/Marmonts/etc all have furry tails.
Nutria are not native to the US and really only are seen in the deep south.

Muskrats are common here in the Carolinas. They live like beavers except they live alone and don't make dams. They will dive holes to live in, but they are usually found only near water. They like slow moving water like a pond or swamp and usually are not found in rivers.

In NC they are a pest and everyone I know shoots them on sight, legal or not. They often drain ponds by mistake when they dig into the bank.

They only eat plants so are not a threat to the chickens.
