That's a groundhog. They were there first, not you. I really can't get over people wanting to blast away at wild animals simply because they are inconvenient for their landscaping plans.
That is just plain mean.
I used to have two that lived under my house, and they did absolutely NO DAMAGE to anything!

it is indeed a groundhog... he wont bother your chickens i live on a 75 acre farm and we have had chickend the whole 9 years and where the chickens stay the groundhogs are not far maybe about 5 or 6 feet and we have never once have had a problem!!!

Woodchucks/Groundhogs/Marmonts/etc all have furry tails.
Nutria are not native to the US and really only are seen in the deep south.
Muskrats are common here in the Carolinas. They live like beavers except they live alone and don't make dams. They will dive holes to live in, but they are usually found only near water. They like slow moving water like a pond or swamp and usually are not found in rivers.
In NC they are a pest and everyone I know shoots them on sight, legal or not. They often drain ponds by mistake when they dig into the bank.
They only eat plants so are not a threat to the chickens.
