I see your point and understand it, however, as a Christian I am not offended by everyone's position. In my eyes, everyone has a right to believe what they believe. I believe Thomas was crazy and therefore his ramblings were later removed from the Bible. I also believe that the bible was written by men, inspired by God, written of miracles, written of commands, written to help people, not hurt them.

Honestly? I haven't seen one post from anyone telling me I am wrong because I believe Jesus died on the cross. Everyone is entitled to their opinion.

One thing that is different about me than most others, though. I was not raised in any church, or with any faith at all. I came across that in my adult life, lived the church life for a while. Then came the "OMG DEBI!!!! He is gay! What are you doing?" Yeah. MY Jesus told me to love others as I love myself. MY God told me that he is the final judge and judge not lest you be judged. It is the simple things in the Bible that I try to live by, not subscribed to what others in my faith think is "right".

You are always so stinkin sweet!

i loved the first few pages however the bashing begins.

I am just relaying my history and showing things that lead me to where I am today. Nobody has bashed anyone here for their beliefs.

"Question with boldness even the existence of a God; because, if there be one, he must more approve of the homage of reason, than that of blind-folded fear." -- Thomas Jefferson

If some of the world's political and religious leaders could have had discussions such as this one over the centuries, the world might be a better place now than it is.

I like your quotation from Jefferson!

I have a question for the group. What morals, or ethical considerations do you consider the most important? I have been told that I can't be a moral person without religion; a statement that I find beyond absurd. What do you think?

I think that is ridiculous. My most important is honesty. Being a Christian, I am not supposed to lie. I would love to - it would be easier!!! But I dont. *sigh*

Religion and morality are 2 different things. I will give a detailed response tomorrow. I am heading off to bed now.

While I am not religious at all, I am very moral. I have also known very moral religious people and very IMMORAL religious people.

Morality has nothing to do with religion. We are social animals and in order to exist as such, there are certain rules, norms, and "morals" that members of the group must follow. It's an evolved trait of social animals. Everything from ants to lions have to follow rules of the group. We just happen to call them "morals". We also learn these traits and behaviours from our parents, and pass them on to our own offspring.

Now, that may not seem as romantic as having moral traits instilled into us by a divine power, but it doesn't make it any less true.

Also, you can easily prove wrong anyone who claims you can't be both moral and nonreligious. Are you nonreligious? Are you "moral". If yes to both, then they are wrong.

Finally, morals can also be subjective. What may be inappropriate in one group may be perfectly acceptable in another.

If the nonreligious were really immoral, then we would be the majority group in prisons. We are far from it.
