Thank you fowltemptress! Very well said. That is exactly what I meant when I said "community groups". I was speaking of like hobbies not like spiritual beliefs. Not that I don't enjoy that too but I've never encountered a group that has formed and stayed together on this premise alone (except this thread which has been a lot of fun). I have met some wonderful people when I've volunteered or joined other groups. For instance I sing and garden etc so joining in a musical group or going to a class on gardening is great fun for me. I also got involved in my neighborhood association and help plan some of our neighborhood events.

Prettiest Frog and I have WHAT in my yard? you both said exactly what I was thinking. It is never to late to start a new carreer. I went back to college late and felt very awkward on campus at first until a professor showed me how silly it was for me to feel that way. She pointed out that "reentry students" are actually much better students than younger students are because they appreciate the opportunity more, they take their classes more seriously and they are often more focused (of course their are exceptions to this on both sides).

College is also a great place to make wonderful friendships with other thinking people! I am quite shy when it comes to making new friends at first but school throws you together with others in a way that makes the process of getting to know them seem very natural and seamless. That horrible awkward stage is not there because you are already in class together and discussing ideas together right from the start. Bonds can't help but form. It's great!

I started at community college with only a couple of night classes (more older folks in night classes but I enjoyed all my classes). There were a bunch of grants and scholarships available to me that I had no idea existed (I was the first in my family to attend college) and my college counselor walked me through everything easily even though I was a total idiot when it came to knowing anything about going back to school (I didn't even have my high school diploma). There are also financial counselors on campus that are worth their weight in gold when it comes to showing you how to apply for financial aid and scholarships!

Deb and Prettiest Frog great stories! I love hearing stories like those! We love to think of ourselves as above the animals, especially when we are religious (except for the earth-based religions which tend to revere nature and feel very connected to animals etc). We could all learn a lot about our part in this world by watching animals. For good and bad we are animals too and part of the interconnectedness of this planet (probably not a real word but my brain is tired this morning).

Mom'sfolly what a great suggestion! I had no idea that such groups existed. How do they get through these discussions and avoid the bitterness that can sometimes result from folks that have been hurt by the same church? This would be very cathartic if they could grieve together without fostering too many negative feelings! I wish I had had somthing like this when I left the church. I guess colllege was my place to do this although I still had to tread softly to avoid offending christians in the classes.

I've said it before and I'll say it again. I love this thread!!!

I suppose I can add another reason to be grateful for not being religious. I don't have to put up with other people feeling my time has no value and they are entitled to it.

That reason suits me well!

amoung many others, for being grateful.

I became a private pilot at age 50. Not due to religion or lack of, empty nest was the reason that I needed a BIG change in my life. The reason dosen't matter, what does matter is that you forever stay challenged and you'll be sure not to waste your time sinking in the bog of despair.

I am sooooooooo grateful to Terrie for letting me start this thread..I lurk here all the time; I find myself nodding my head in agreement; and just amazement sometimes that you all are expressing things that I felt but couldn't put into words.

Thanks to all of you.

Whispering Winds...in Genesis and Deuteronomy (I think) there is reference to 'fallen' angels. I am posting this link just in case you are interested in reading it. At one time I was so hungry for answers about things I didn't understand in the Holy Book and I researched until exhausted on a number of things. This does account for the 'extra' or not clearly explained to the novice - about people who were 'romantic' with daughters of Adam. Also, at this time in my life when I was 'hungry' I had some kind of epiphany, revelation, awakening - whatever word describes what I was having I found that the more I learned, the stronger my belief became, and since then, I have found that many people I come into contact with have not really taken the time to research with all their hearts to get to the bottom of things they don't understand. No, I'm not trying to sway you into anything, I'm not a preacher, not good enough to represent God, don't know enough. I just know it takes many hours of study and prayer to get right up next to God with UNDERSTANDING. And I do know people who daily read their Bibles, professed they did not understand some things in it, but had enough faith to not let that fact get in the way. But, the awakening I had caused me to realize that although people are sinners and they say and do wrong things, they are basically imperfect and flawed, unlike the God I know, love, and trust. Just like in the movie AND JUSTICE FOR ALL starring Al Pacino. They're just people.
This thread is great, isn't it? I really appreciate the way one can say what they feel without getting jumped on or insulted or made fun of. It shows what a great bunch of people post on Backyard Chickens!

The bible starts with this is the book of Adam. Which essentially could easily mean that there is a book of john or bob or george. There is also mention in genesis of the people east of eden. If you read the entire story as so few people do, you find it is a tale of one family perhaps as a parable meant to teach others to behave. The entire intent of all religion is to sacralize the norms of the time. If you believe that you should follow every word of the bible then only the orthodox jews are doing it right. Once you drop part of it you call all of it into question. Jesus never said disregard all the rules dad set forth in the torah. And since there are people who do cherry pick what they want we should be aware that the bible also takes a pretty strong stance against democracy and there are those who would follow that edict as well.

2 things,

1. I agree with the above post. In a Ancient Middle Eastern History course I took in college, taught by a multi-lingual Sephardic Jew no less, he pointed out that the word for God in the book of Genesis is "Elohim" a PLURAL word! IN THE ORIGINAL HEBREW IN THE BIBLE!

2. DD is in kindergarten. We live in a rural area, the publuc elementary school has about 300 students. Nearly everyone here is Christian even if they aren't actively practicing. DD last week made a comment about "God controls the weather." I asked who told her that. She said her teacher did. Granted, this is kindergarten, not high school earth science, but I'm not sure if I want her teacher telling her this or not. I don't think she'll be traumatized and DH and I haven't done much in the way of religious instruction. I'm not totally comfortable with that.

Since we have goats and DH is of Germanic descent, should I tell her about Thor? It's not God, it's a big red-haired man with goats that controls the weather?

Get a book of mythology for kids and read them to her.

I used to love both Greek and Norse mythology.

You could also get your daughter a child's science book on the weather and read it to her.
