Anyone NOT celebrate New Year's in any special way?

DH and I have not gone out for years; I worked in the music business when I was younger and got all that nonsense out of my system long ago. New Year's Eve is amateur night in many ways.

This year I think we have a new family tradition though: we started watched "Lord of the Rings" straight through from 1pm yesterday! The last movie ended right after midnight.

My niece is coming down from NH for a sleepover today and my daughters are excited to see their cousin. I think they're planning a shopping spree for tomorrow because their holdiay cash and gifts cards are burning holes in their wallets.

I usually just celebrate because it's fun (a good reason to throw a small party with my kids) and am happy that I'm alive and in good health to see in another new year. The whole "New Year" thing really isn't that big of a deal if you sit and think about it, but I guess I look at it in a different perspective. I just celebrate my family and I being alive, healthy, and having made it through one more year. It's also a good time to sit back and reflect how far my family has come in the past year.

Does the sale at Michael's count as "special"?!! LOL!! Nope, we don't do a single thing to celebrate, we eat black eyed peas all year long and it has never changed our fortune and I hate collards but get them through recycle as my chickens will chow down on them in a heartbeat! We just enjoy the day off together and hope for a safe, healthy and happy new year for our family and our country.

I was fast asleep at midnight! I know, I really have to curb these wild-woman ways of mine.

I was woken up though by DH's alarm at 3:30AM to - get this one - put more wood one the fire! He fell back asleep and I've been up ever since. I made a yummy bacon and cheddar quiche though, with diced fresh pears on the side...

I'm with you. It's just another day, arbitrarily picked a few centuries ago to be the first day of the new year. They could more logically have picked the day after Solstice since it is the first day that is longer and therefore the start of the new cycle. Or the 21st of June because it's the longest day. Or the first day a new flower blooms. Or--well, you get my drift.

We done what we do every year......we watch our eyelids fall and go to sleep. Celebrating the new year is not a big thing around here.

We mainly look back and see how the Lord has blessed and how we are safe and healthy and alive to see another year. And we pray that the Lord hand will be over us through the next year

Though, tonight we will go bowling with our church.

For my new years celebration every year I work hard to see if I can actually sleep through the night without being awakened at midnight to the sound of shotguns and fireworks. Worked pretty good this year.

I would like for someone to explain, though, why New Years begins in the middle of the winter, seems to me it should begin at the spring solstice. Just seems more fitting somehow....

I agree with both of you. I haven't celebrated new years in many years, then when we buried my mama on new years day 15 years ago it was just one more reason not to celebrate it.
I do celebrate the winter solstice. Looking forward to spring and knowing it's getting closer is something to celebrate!
